Houman Posted April 6, 2015 Report Posted April 6, 2015 Prop Strike, bring out the $$$ for engine tear down and complete gear and wing inspection... Quote
Hank Posted April 6, 2015 Report Posted April 6, 2015 That was in New Zealand, I think. Gotta love the rescue! Quote
Houman Posted April 6, 2015 Report Posted April 6, 2015 was that pilot error by retracting the landing gear or was it the landing gear collapsing because of a failure. I have never landed or taken off from a grass field with the rocket, and don't intend to ever do that, but just wondering. Quote
aviatoreb Posted April 6, 2015 Report Posted April 6, 2015 I've seen that video. Â Seems like a collapse - no pilot error. Â That video is in my mind when I stay away from soft fields with my heavy rocket. Â That is a wonderful group helping out to lift the plane - but the one fellow in the back who is lifting the airplane by grabbing the control surfaces may be further harming the planning. Quote
JKSmith Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 Has anyone flown a Mooney out of a grass field before? I think it could be doable if the field is properly maintained, and planted with grasses like Bermuda grass and the ground is compacted regularly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
bonal Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 Check out Piperpainter he flys his red hot C into high altitude dirt and the like. I think he thinks it's a super cub. 2 Quote

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk You better believe it! Sun n Fun, every trip to the beach, the grass strip next to my last job . . . We have several members here who are based on grass, I can think of two immediately. Search YouTube for piperpainter, he takes his Mooney places that I would never go--like unimproved back country strips. I prefer maintained grass fields. Quote
Hector Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 Perhaps not the best soft field takeoff technique, but probably should not have collapsed the nose gear. If I had to guess I would take a close look at the landing gear preloads. Quote

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I fly regurlay into a grass field. Not a big deal if it is well mantained. I am attaching a link to a video I made about flying into a grass strip. Of course follow the POH and instruction...  Oscar  https://youtu.be/wsmSszqt46E 1 Quote

DAVIDWH Posted April 8, 2015 Report Posted April 8, 2015 My question would be, how do you keep a grass strip well maintained when groundhogs are laughing and partying nearby? Quote
