SkyBound Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 I was wondering if anyone has had experience replacing the Aerosonic combined Manifold Pressure and Fuel Flow (Aerosonic Part #651035-0107) gauge? Please see the photo attached. The FF portion has become INOP and three instrument shops that it has visited over the last month have not been able to repair it due to the lack of necessary parts. If you know of a location that may have a replacement with the same part number or have experience replacing this instrument with either a substitute combination MAP/FF gauge or two separate gauges please chime in. Thanks. --Alex Quote
carusoam Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 If plan A doesn't work... Potential plan B.... Buy-EI.com JPinstruments.com Insightavionics.com They all build a primary instrument that will occupy the same space and provide CHT, EGT, FF, MP.... BE SURE TO CHECK THE DETAILS.... best regards, -a- Quote
SkyBound Posted April 4, 2014 Author Report Posted April 4, 2014 Carusoam - Thank you for the suggestions. To clarify my question to the group - I recently invested in a JPI EDM-830 and looking to have the lowest cost/simplest fix to replace this Aerosonic instrument to have primary (since the 830 is not certified) MAP and FF information. I am open to either a single instrument or dual instruments. Thanks again. --Alex Quote
carusoam Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 Check in with Frank at JPI to see if he can help with a trade in, to go from 830 you have to the certified version 930? Very modern and very expensive. Then compare individual Guages from EI, somewhat modern and somewhat expensive. Great company. Finding an exact replacement or getting yours rebuilt by an instrument shop is highly probable, least expensive route... Best regards, -a- Quote
SkyBound Posted April 4, 2014 Author Report Posted April 4, 2014 I spoke with JPI and the upgrade to the 930 doesn't make sense cost wise. I won't gain any new functionality, just the capability to ditch factory instruments. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the Aerosonic instrument may still get repaired and if not try to keep the replacement to a minimum by getting just the MAP and FF gauges. Thanks again. --Alex 1 Quote
DaveAnderson Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 Alex, I have both mp and a fuel flow indicator for sale that I took out of my 231 when I got the edm900. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/11595-fs-various-parts-from-m20k/ 1 Quote
Mike A Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Alex, were you able to figure out a replacement for the MP/FF guage? I have the same issue and would like to see how it worked out. Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 If I were you/y'all and had a non-primary JPI or similar already installed with fuel flow, I would dig through the nuances of the regulations and see if the FF is actually required for our planes... I don't think they are. (I wouldn't want to fly without one, but many of us have already installed something better.) Don't spend money on things you might not need. Quote
SkyBound Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 KS Mooniak - from the research that I did, the FF gauge is required and can only be replaced with another certified instrument - i.e. the JPI 830 does not qualify. Mike - Pacific Southwest Instruments was able to fix the gauge. The repair ended up being around $1,300. Unfortunately, once the instrument was installed, it revealed that the transducer was bad as well and had to be replaced (another $600 plus labor). Contact Mona Hiebert at PSI to make arrangements to send them your instrument: Mona Hiebert Customer Sales/Service Pacific Southwest Instruments 1721 Railroad Street Corona, CA 92880 Phone (951) 737-0790 Ext: 122 Fax (951) 273-7149 mhiebert@psilabs.com www.psilabs.com The other option if you prefer not to fix the gauge is to replace it with Aerospace Logic: http://www.aerospacelogic.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=232 Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if I can be of additional assistance. --Alex Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 The Aerospace Logic looks like money better spent vs. fixing obsolete instruments IMO. Or putting that money towards a modern engine monitor... prices are down thanks to competition! Quote
Mike A Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 I was under the understanding that it was not required, however was useful. It is not listed on the type certificate and is not in A TOMATO FLAMES. I too have a JPI 730 with FF that I use, however the fact that it is INOP irritates me. I am considering installing a new EI digital tach, and i have a EI FF gauge/harness that I never installed in my previous cherokee, so adding a EI MP gauge wouldn't be a big jump and would look nice.
