I was just surfing the net and ran across this M20E being sold for salvage, appearently the pilot ran off the runway and hit a sign damaging the wing and causing a prop strike. Looking at it it appears to be a vintage E with no mods and a high time engine. The damage looks substantial enough that it will not be an economical repair. I looked to see if I could find anything about the incident but there was nothing in the databases, and I have no idea when it happened. I guess just wondering if this was a mooney space bird and if anyone knew the story.

I wish there was a salvage yard for all those Mooneys to go to so we'd have a place to get weird little parts. Hopefully an MSC will buy it and break it down for parts.

2 months ago I bid on an early 70s E that was geared-up here in Ames Iowa.  It had a 250hr factory reman, prop destroyed, step mount tweeked, nose gear rod bent, a few scrapes but otherwise pretty good shape.  The plane is in very good condition, nice interior and paint, GPS but not a 430. Some questions about crud in fuel (clogged injector linked to the accident).   It went for $20K.  I missed it by $1500.  Still sitting in the hangar next to mine.

LASAR has a fairly substantial inventory of salvage planes/parts.  I do not know how they've acquired their collection, though.  Certainly some of the salvage yards buy/bid on these auctions, but when calling around years ago it seems none of the major yards have many Mooney parts!

I watch the salvage listings mainly out of curiosity, but I did purchase my salvage J in Oct 2012.  It has been a lot of work, but worthwhile for my goals in acquiring spares and upgrades for my '77 J.  There isn't a huge market for Mooney parts aside from the easily damaged things like control surfaces and some gear parts, and a few "upgrade" parts like J cowls, late model seats and yokes, etc.  In my observation over the last couple of years, it is rare to find a good cowl or ailerons that aren't damaged by any event that condemns a plane.  Of course modern avionics are desirable and usually un-damaged unless there was a flood.

I've been curious what the salvage planes go for. It appears they bring better money than they should considering the price of flying airplanes these days. Why would you pay 20k for a geared up E with a prop strike when you probably could have bought the plane for 30K before the damage occurred? It is such a crap shoot! I sure learned the hard way.

Here's the only info I could find. No word about the last incident. Looks like the last owner had it for several years.

It is very rare that the salvage bids are worth repairing , generally the only parts that move quickly are the generic parts that are not make / model specific......  Most of the Mooney specific parts from the last Mooney I parted were sold to Lasar , or are still in my possession ,   That being said , I stilled pulled over 30K from a 63 C model , (corrosion on wing spar)   .........

Alan,

What was the N number on the 63 with spar corrosion?
