aviatoreb Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 Shouldn't war be total? Should there be any rules? Shouldn't it be awful so we do NOT do it? Shouldn't we have human decisionmaking...with the consequences be "along for the ride"? If we decide to go to war should it be sanitized...? Aha - well ask a geek: Captain James T Kirk knew and he agreed with you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Taste_of_Armageddon In that old episode of the original Star Trek Series, "A Taste of Armageddon" two groups were at war, but they sanitized it since they decided regular war was so untidy and uncivilized. So they simulated war in the computers, as sort of a computer game, but then when the computer said x number of people died, they would really kill the people - politely and voluntarily. In order to keep the treaty and rules of war lest a real war break out. The problem was in the story that it was too comfortable and stable a situation so this war carried on for a thousand years like that. Until our hero Captain James T Kirk came along and changed the situation according to his morals - ok never mind the "prime directive" which our hero Kirk was never worried about anyway if it didn't fit his vision of how a planet should be run - or there was a pretty girl. I think I watched to much Terminator...I DO NOT LIKE DRONES. Period. My and other country's feelings about them have been confirmed in my mind. Now we are moving closer to having them in US airspace...over my city? Over my house?.... Tell me about it. The new announcement of drone test sites includes Rome-Griffiths just south of here, so I do believe I will be often mixing it up with them - big sky theory! Separate from use as weapons, like it or not, drones are coming. They will deliver aid to storm victims, monitor platforms for police, deliver packages for Amazon, and all sorts of other fun activities. 1

Bringing robot warriors to the battle field won't change this. This means that war will still be ugly, terrible and tragic for those that live on that contested ground. Just like in the Terminator stories, newer tech will destroy older tech and of course we will not be the only ones with this tech. All the bots and drones do is reduce the number of battle field casualties. What happens to the people in the contested area after the battle is won is another story. Keeping men and women in the cockpit has not proven to be deterrence to going to war. Changing people out for androids and robots doesn't change the thinking, or battle planning because the end game is still control of the ground. A robotic fighter plane is the exact same asset as the manned fighter plane. Commanders in charge are not going to want to lose those assets any more than they do now.
