eaglebkh Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 I believe one update to the vintage panel that will really help with marketability is to convert the panel to the standard/modern layout. Many people may be split on glass vs. steam, but very people will be looking specifically for the "shotgun" layout. Quote
N601RX Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 The plane is equipped with a GNS430, KX-155 KN-64 KT76A Like I had said, I am not interested in a major refit, I have no plans as of now, just merely entertaining the conversation My apologies for being a little vague, I was mainly gauging thoughts on the AXP340 as a replacement for the KT76A, but didn't want to limit thought input to just that alone if someone saw a valid reason to bring up something related. @cruiser that is an interesting point, I haven't really kept up on the details of the pending changes, or how deep the potential impact will be when things flesh out. You already have a gps and 2nd com. It seems to me like a engine monitor and autopilot might be a good choice. Quote
carusoam Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 The iPad is a nice check. Follow the FAA approved needles, but check that the needles are leading to the proper destination.... Same for synthetic vision... While flying an ILS in the soup. Following the needles to the MAP, it would be a comforting picture of an airport coming into view on the iPad or Aspen... I'm an old steam gauge guy still, with non-WAAS GPS. WAAS upgrades still off in the future... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
Marauder Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 With all due respect, tired or not if you can't keep yourself within 20 miles of your course with your currently installed navigation equipment, do yourself a favor and buy an iPad now while you are considering your IFR-approved GPS options. I'm serious. You're going to get yourself violated, and that is bad for all of us. I feel a little bad for being so blunt, but I'd feel worse if I kept my mouth shut and something bad happened to you. GPS is wonderful, even if only via handheld. You'll never go back once you fly with it. Jim The iPad is a nice check. Follow the FAA approved needles, but check that the needles are leading to the proper destination.... Best regards, -a- In partial defense of pine runner; back in my pre-GPS days (before I bought the first moving map GPS portable), it was not uncommon for me to be in similar predicaments as pinerunner. Ok, maybe not 20 miles off, but close enough that I felt compelled to file NASA forms. If you are flying around with nothing more than a couple of VORs and an ADF, it wasn't that hard to get disoriented while you are trying to read a sectional for a VOR freq. Even after I got my IFR rating, with the hardware I was flying with, I felt compelled to purchase a portable GPS just to make sure if I cancelled IFR I wasn't going to accidently wander into some airspace. I agree that with the availability of iPads, there is no excuse for not having situational awareness. And to Anthony's point about the comfort factor; AMEN brother! When you fly steam gauges as along as I did, you really never knew how much better it could be. Quote
carusoam Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 The needles are as accurate as you need to be. The brain is the weak point, even a good one... A simple distraction can lead to a gear up, or following a needle into something hard... Situational awareness is key. Improved situational awareness, fortunately, is relatively low cost... Back in the day, a friend turned the wrong direction while following a VOR. Long day... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
BigTex Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 Back in the day, the planes I flew didn't even have a VOR... So I just followed roads (IFR). All I had was a sectional and road atlas. More times than I want to admit I had a "where the hell am I" moments. Navigation today is so much easier. Now you have to work at having one of those moments. 1 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 I was looking at my old log book to comment on IFR training and noticed CFII Joe Rose signing my log book on a couple of days working on ADF holding. These kids have no idea! 2 Quote

carusoam Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 The answer is....no, there is no sensible priced avionics upgrade. Wether it's for a C, R or TN... Go with a used Garmin430W, and it will still cost 1/5 of the A/C's value or a couple of month's salary. But it has the greatest of all capabillities.... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
jetdriven Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 The problem with used 430W, is it costs 10-12K laid in. GTN 650 is 14K, GTN-750 is 17K. there is no clear entry point. We soldier on with a VFR KLN-89B and an aera 500. Getting harder to go IFR to small airports, they are all going to GPS only approaches. Quote
carusoam Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 IFR KLN 90B, non waas, gets you to the airport without vertical guidance... A few of these may become available when the 770 become available...Possibly in a month or two... See what the trade in value is when things settle out... Best regards, -a- Quote
