New Garmin Options! com, audio panel

It does look like the FS510 is included in it. The video you provided didn’t show much new on the xi over the original GTN. From what I could see, a new higher resolution screen and a faster processor. Everything else is already in the current version. Time for Peter Garmin to show his allegiance and buy a replacement 750xi for his ancient 750. You know, the one with the ancient technology in it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro -
I don’t think any of the major manufacturers allow user installed firmware updates. Might have something to do with the STC or simply to provide the shops with a revenue stream. I seem to be paying a steady stream of $100 payments every time I go in for a firmware update. The only exceptions have been when the firmware update addresses an issue that affects the STC. The only other exception has been JPI. In their case, they want the whole unit returned to conduct an update of the firmware. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Does this GTN xi release remind anyone of the days when Garmin used to release new car GPS units on a regular basis? Only difference is the number of zeros after the price. But at least Peter Garmin is happy. -

I didn’t see any mention of NOTAMs for the ILS. Could it be there was an issue with the hardware? There is a NOTAM for today. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro -
New pilot looking at a '75 M20F
Marauder replied to PhateX1337's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Brazil just enacted their own version of GDPR. If you do business in Europe, Brazil and California, it will become a way of life. And I expect it will spread as countries can see it is another revenue stream. The main requirement of these GDPR laws is to define: 1) do you have a legitimate reason to have PII?(personally identifiable information) 2) are you protecting that information if you have it? and 3) do you have a record retention policy to ensure that PII is disposed of after you use it. And of course you have records proving you are doing all of this. There have already been fines issued. The Marriott Group was fined 99M Euros and British Airways is subject to a $230M fine. I think in part the law was introduced to make companies accountable for data breeches as Paul mentioned and to put some controls in place over all the data mining that goes on with companies like FaceBook and Google. It’s the norm for many industries not to allow any kind of plug in memory devices. We can use them but they need to have the corporate encryption loaded on them. Other companies, like the bank my wife works for won’t allow them at all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro -

Got news for you smarty pants. SDs, CDs, flash drives, USB drives and all the rest are old news. It’s now all in the cloud baby. Just not sure who’s cloud. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro -
Thanks for posting this. As I mentioned in another thread, I have used a number of avionics shops over the years. What this video shows is what I have seen with shops that cut corners. Choose your avionics shop carefully... As someone who works in the electronics industry, when a manufacturer specifies a requirement, it is because of our testing shows that environmental factors exist that may cause interference. That’s exactly what is happening here. I’ve posted this video before, but here is a video of the squelch opening up on my Garmin GTN because of interference from the remote indicator on my JPI 900. Should I blame Garmin because they didn’t shield their box well enough or should JPI be blamed for producing a product that emits electronic noise? The fix for the noise was a ferrite filter being installed on the remote indicator’s lead. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Personally, I am getting tired of reading the bashing from people who not only don’t own an Aspen product, don’t even own a glass system of any kind. What people seem to forget that competition in this market place is an advantage for us consumers. Do you really think Aspen would have introduced the E5 if the G5 from Garmin hadn’t showed up? And why was the G5 introduced at all? To compete with the Aspen PFD. As well, I think Avidyne has helped check what would have been a steady exorbitant price increase in the GPS navigator space. As Mongo used to say: “Competition good, Monopoly bad”. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Thanks for the follow-up. Much to Peter Garmin’s dismay, this wasn’t a failure of the Aspen as much as it was a failure of doing the installation correctly. Hopefully the new shops will get you in quickly. You will love the new Max version. The display is so much crisper than the original unit. Add in the new features and an additional 2 year warranty, it was a sweet deal. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Dual Garmin G5's install question
Marauder replied to Jim Peace's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Heavens forbid you need to put your Mooney in a river to get to the correct river line. Jim, There is a nice seam where the rivet line overlaps on the fuselage. I was able to use level the Mooney using no jacks and just the lip drop-off from the hangar and letting out some air from the nose wheel. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro -
Mine have been in 29 years. I’m not worried about them. Since they are individual bladders, removal and replacement (repair) if they fail is a lot easier and should be cheaper than installing them from scratch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Based on your description, it sounds like the Max unit has a problem. Have you tried calling Aspen technical support directly? When my non-Max units were exchanged, my IA removed them, I drove them to the avionics shop and the avionics shop sent them in for conversion. When they were returned, the process was reversed. There was no calibration of the AHRS needed. What other issues was the avionics shop working on? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

I can remember your pain. I was in the tube for a full body MRI. I entered not claustrophobic but left it claustrophobic. And the jack hammer description fits it perfectly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I read the accident report of the plane that crashed on takeoff. There was evidence his neck was snapped as it went over the front seat back (without head rests). I decided to fix mine in the front. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Accident in Johnson County Kansas Mooney M20 S
Marauder replied to Frank B.'s topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
For me is it is a flow for everything. When I do a walk around, I pull up the checklist and verify I hit all of the killer items. Same goes for the cockpit flow. I think flows by themselves can be a risk because if the flow gets interrupted, there is a chance something gets missed. The checklist that supports for a flow can be pretty simply. As an example, when I configure my plane for landing, I do the pre-landing flow followed up by the checklist BUMPS item. As someone who does safety pilot flights, I get to see firsthand how even using a checklist can go sideways. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro -
New Aspen E5 - In-Flight Crash and Reset
Marauder replied to bd95r's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I was a DG flyer for years and really never appreciated an HSI until I had one. The main advantage is your DG and CDI are wrapped into one depiction. For me, I enjoy knowing what I need is right in front of me and not having to scan up to the CDI. You can see the CDI showing the course is to the left (as depicted by the MFD). New Aspen E5 - In-Flight Crash and Reset
Marauder replied to bd95r's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
In case you E5 owners haven’t heard. Aspen announced yesterday that an HSI is being added to the E5. The article quotes a price for the winds aloft and annunciation, not sure it includes the HSI. https://www.avweb.com/avionics/aspen-introduces-new-e5-features/?MailingID=258&utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Fewer+Fatal+Passenger+Aircraft+Accidents+In+2019%2C+Unexplained+Drone+Swarms+Alarm+Residents&utm_campaign=Fewer+Fatal+Passenger+Aircraft+Accidents+In+2019%2C+Unexplained+Drone+Swarms+Alarm+Residents+-+Friday+January+3%2C+2020 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
