Discussing bicycles and Mooney's........
TWinter replied to Tony Armour's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Looks good..We took a trip to NH seacoast back in June/July. There were lots and lots of bicycles riding A1A along the coast. As we were stuck in the rental car I had mentioned to my other half I wish we could have brought our bikes. We usually travel as just the two of us. Keeping the backseat out for the extra room (for bikes) would be great. I would love to ride my new Fuji Transonic along the coast of Maine and New Hampshire. BBQ grill cover idea is a great idea as well. -
Congrats and welcome

Here is the static cling. Took some time and careful trim, but three years and still looks good. A HUGE difference in the cabin with TN heat. Obviously I don't remove it, but from a legal standpoint it is 100% legal within FAA standards since it is a "cling tint" and removable. This is 35%, it looks darker in the picture because it's in the hanger and the canopy cover is still draped over the other windows. Works fine during night flight and has no distortions. -Tom

Welcome..Great looking Mooney

I think a PP can transition without a Mooney specific instructor, but having said that, I don't think it is the most practical way to become a good Mooney pilot. My transition was with a older CFI. He was the same CFI that got me current in a little Cherokee after a 25 yr hiatus from flying (I only had about 90 hrs total when I bought my Mooney). If asked was it the safest transition?..probably not. I did a lot of the transition training on my own. By that I mean, I used any resources available such as any reading, videos, DVDs, forums, talking to other pilots and even Youtube videos. My first year with my Mooney was limited me to flying in a "comfort zone", my flying with passengers was also very selective. In closing I'll say yes, you can safely transition with a non-Mooney CFI. The trade-off is much of the proficiency and polish will be left to you. Be careful, know your limits and take your time. It took about three years for me to confidently say I'm flying the Mooney and it's "Not" flying me. With a Mooney specific instructor I'm sure I would have had that warm and fuzzy feeling much sooner. -Tom

1986 at KSFM (Sanford, Maine)...flew one year after getting PPL. Couldn't afford the hobby on a cops salary back then. 2012 at KDYR (Dyersburg, TN)...back in the saddle and love every minute of it

JPI 900 sounds appealing. I really want the 930, but there is just to much of a price difference. I keep waiting and hoping for BIG special on the 930. Almost $2k price difference. Ouch.

Where and when do you read Mooneyspace?
TWinter replied to ryoder's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Before work when having morning coffee and watching the morning news in my recliner, then again at work after I make sure everyone is happy and doing what they are supposed to be doing, at night back in my recliner while "listening" to the TV after dinner... I think I might have a Mooney problem -

ForeFlight Announces Connectivity with Garmin Avionics
TWinter replied to Cabanaboy's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Is this new update working now or scheduled for later in July. I have not seen any info on how to link the 210 to FF. Maybe I'm overlooking the process. I have not been to the hanger to see if FF shows up. Anyone come across the procedure to do it yet. I have the 210 and GDL88. Would like to see how it looks. I'm probably overlooking the how to? -Tom -
Brittain ACCU-Trak II Autopilot for sale
TWinter replied to N601RX's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
The folks at Brittian are awesome to work with..I've needed their help a few times. The "waiting list" has not made much progress, not their fault. Last time I spoke with them about the waiting list they told me the aviation "Gods" were making them jump through hoops and loops. I've been on the "list" as long as I have owned my Mooney. I'm staying on the list just in case.. -
Brittain ACCU-Trak II Autopilot for sale

I bought this same system from him a few years ago..mine has worked like a champ. Best purchase ever Link it up with a Stec30 alt hold and it's a great combination for a fraction of full AP. -
Been there, done that a few weeks ago. Your technique to disconnect aileron was the only way to get in mine. Now you will want to check the other wing. Lastly, I replaced all the tubing under the dash with new. A royal PIA, but PC works great now..I had a small tear in the left boot of the servo. -Tom

Shaw Aero Fuel Caps from M20J
TWinter replied to moosebreath's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
When I had my plane repainted I had the shop send mine off to get polished. Came out great...It's been almost three years and still look good. I use Mother's Billet Polish on them and they keep a nice shine. I think there are some pics in my gallery. -
Living here in the south...I say just do a Confederate Flag theme just to stir the pot some more..lol. Whatever design you decide just pick a quality shop. I had mine done in Mena and they were fantastic to work with and had it done in less than three weeks. I like the new modern schemes, but it seems like that's the same design everyone has been using lately (including me). After looking at the pics you posted I think a sharp vintage paint scheme would look awesome. You could also get real vintage like below. This paint job would get lots of attention...

Garmin 696, Zaon MRX and Sheep Skin Seatcovers for sale..
TWinter replied to TWinter's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
I like the seat covers and agree as others have said in previous posts, they work well in summer and winter. The only reason I'm selling these is because I decided to order a new set in tan that match the interior. When I bought these used I wanted to try them first and see how well I liked them and did not want to front $550 for new ones. I wasn't sure about summer time in Tennessee with them, but they actually do keep me cooler in the summer. I've had them a few years and I think they well worth it. -Tom -

Originally the movie makers said there would never be a TopGun 2 because of the expense and all the cooperation needed by the military. The movie makers had to pull a lot of strings to get the military to help in the original. If this happens it should be interesting to see how and if it turns out. My brother was a TopGun Instructor and said the movie and real world ops are very different. In real world there is no real level of competition or rivalry between the pilots like the movie depicted, but of course the movie makers had to have something to make a movie about so bring on TopGun 2. All that being said bring it on. I'll watch TopGun 2. I watch TopGun every time it comes on the tube, it never gets old, but I also miss the 70s/80s.. -Tom

Thanks for loading..Certainly not "Turbo" speeds..lol. I have to admit I got caught off guard by one of the Lexington controllers. This is where I was a little rusty. One of the Lexington controllers asked me, "What equipment did I have?" Totally caught me off guard since I have never been asked that before. Remember I'm just three years back in the saddle since getting my PPL in the 80s. I think he enjoyed a chuckle out of the fact I did not what he was asking, my bad for not being up to speed on the question and he seemed to enjoy the fact he stumped me, but I can assure you I've gamed up and will know how to answer next time. I guess I would reply as a "Slant Uniform with GPS capability", or "Slant G". That was my only real hiccup on the trip. Portsmouth International was pretty impressive size wise. I was feeling pretty small as the ground control asked me to expedite down the taxi way. I look over and see a what I guess was a KC135 landing right on my back door.

Did a lot of flying last week. Flew from Tennessee to New Hampshire last Monday and it was pretty uneventful other than flying over the Adirondacks, wow..they are huge even from the air, and not much around in the event of emergency landing . This is my longest trip to date. I made the return trip home on Thursday to beat the upcoming storms that were heading to the New England area. The trip back was a little more of a challenge as I had to skirt the storms moving in. Picked up light rain, lower ceiling, but missed the major part of the storms, I already had a back-up plan to replace the direct route I initially started. This was a lot of seat time and a great personal experience for me..Definitely put me out of my normal comfort zone. Great trip and good training experience. Tried getting the Flightaware to post the flight..apparently I'm not copying the files correctly, Tail # is 7741M if anybody want to check the trip out or post it on here. The biggest thing I learned for a trip like this for me was plan, plan and plan again. The GPS showed roughly 1000 NM one way. That's about 2000 +/- NM in four days. That's lots of flying for me..
