How much oil does your engine use?
yvesg replied to FloridaMan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Trick is to add 1/2 littre (sorry folks, metric here) when it gets below your prescribed limit. I run somewhere between 15 to 25 hours for 1 littre. (From memory) Yves C-FQKM -
We actually have Mooney cheeseburgers at Ottawa Rockcliffe. Ned will confim. I'll take a picture next time I buy one! Yves

Ned, do you know if Sue is on this forum? I know 2 other Mooney owners in the area (1 in Kingston and 1 in Gatineau) and sent them emails, still waiting for their answer. Yves

Dates and location of this one is not optimal for me. I am interested in participating in the Caravan however might have to pass on this year. There might be other means to get the training for me here in Eastern Canada (Some instructors c an provide this training... and I am trying to get other local Mooney owners to split the costs). If others in the area have interest, please PM me. Yves

I see duct tape on the local flight club 172s all the time. They use it to block air vents in winter and patch other stuff around! Yves

Leaking wing drain sump 68 M20F
yvesg replied to mikesalman's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
You might want to look at this thread: http://mooneyspace.com/topic/8979-always-have-a-fuel-drain-spare-or-plug/ In there I have a picture of a disassembled drain plug. There is a snap ring that holds it all together. The rubber ring dislodged from the post and I destroyed it while taking all this apart. I have sourced a compatible o-ring and fixed it. It is now my spare that I keep in the junk box in the luggage area... just in case the new one fails. However these ar worth only about $20. Make sure you have a new one handy before the current one gets removed. Here is a picture of what it looked like last year before I got it replaced by my A&P. If yours look better... it should unscrew... Yves -
I would assume that if the damage is very recent that the seller's asking price would already include some cuts right? Yves

We (Spouse and I) have decided to fly to Oshkosh this year. I just registered as member . Does anyone knows if my wife needs to be member too in order to get the entrance price discout? Yves

This reminds me of my IFR practical test a year and a half ago: I prepared an IFR croscountry and had to explain it to the examiner. His first question was: OK, assume you take off IFR and then at 1000 feet, you get a COM failure... what do you do? The answer: I change the transponder code to signal my issue... and then I reach in my pocket for my cell phone and call the tower. His answer: OK lets assume that you don't have a cell on board. My answer: Then I reach in my flight bag and I pull my ICOM portable... He said: OK lets assume that your batteries are dead? I said: Don't think this could happen as I pull from my flight bag a pack of 36 AAs batteries. He broke in laughter... He took a picture and told me... This is going to transport Canada! Yves

When you said that you felt closed in, this migth be due to the fact that you are used to more room around, however after a few flights I think that this feeling will go away. My first flight in a Mooney in the left seat was about 15 years ago and I have a glimpse of memory about that feeling you are describing. I am a bit claustrophobic myself but feel very good in the Mooney. Yves

Hi guys, Since I acquired the aircraft, I used my local shop for the annual and just before that some upgrades that were overdue and required before painting it. I don't recall the exact costs involved as I write this however both events were several thousands. The shop I use is not an MSC and I recall hearing in the past that Mooneys are a pain in the butt to work on... etc. The maintenance lead (who is not owner of the shop) has a few individuals under him and in November, after I got very good service from him and another individual I elected to give each of them $50 tip. This looked like a surprise to him , that I did not have to do this however in my opinion, a $100 extra on several thousands will not matter much. At last annual, I gave the lead two $50 bills... one for him and I said, please reward the best worker you have on your team... but don't split it (This way, he decides who gets it which is the best way for him to feel in control and get the respect from his workers) I would like to ear comments on this. If the maintenance lead would be the shop owner, I would probably not tip the owner but have him decide who gets it. I believe that this way of providing rewards does increase motivation for the individuals to work on the Mooney right? Yves

Not meaning to hijack the thread however it crossed my mind while planning trips to Mexico that we pilots are highly vulnerable to drug trafficking with or without our knowledge/consent Assume you land at some Mexican field and park your plane for a few days. It would be very easy for someone to hide illicit payload somewhere (a good place would be where the retractable step gismos and elt are... just a dozen quarter turn screws and there you go.) With Internet, they can easily find where the aircraft is based at. If the aircraft makes it back without any border issue, their contact can retrieve their stuff at night the same way. I came up with some ideas to "mark" the fasteners allowing knowledge if someone put a screwdriver in. Should always visually inspect each of those marks before flying back. Now, lets say you do as I suggest above, realize someone tampered with some access panel and then find the package... do you: a) Throw it in the garbage and fly back? Contact the local authorities to let them know you found this? Yves

Had an email exchange with Cecilia (again) today and they are still waiting for the part. apparently one of their supplier is having machine trouble.... I have the step tie wrapped in the retracted position for now.. bugs my wife a bit (she is 5'5") and she would hit the flaps sometimes... Yves

Thanks Dale and Marauder. Several Mooneys I have seen (if not all) have the pilot side gear slightly tilted to the inside. (Including mine) Does this angle has any incidence on the required (safe) pre-load value? Yves
-
About Brittain, Anyone having issues with them lately? I sent them a retractable step boot to overhaul 3 months ago and am still waiting for it. Wondering if anyone else has slow response like this too? Yves
-
Interesting article! Can someone explain to me what is the "pre-load"? Yves

Every year on my birthday I treat myself. with a local flight... perhaps I shall change this? Last september, I went to the airport for that and there was a Mooney in the airport perimeter fence. This aircraft attempted to abort a take off. The airport was NOTAM closed. Maybe someone w ants to tell us something! Yves

How about engaging the starter? (After pulling the mixture control) It would probably enable holding the prop back a little and if it is not horizontal, activate it and stop where you want it. Yves
-
Perhaps insurance companies shall offer a discount for those who get this installed? This would motivate people to put it in. Yves

Transporting Mooney by Truck Looking for Experiences/Costs
yvesg replied to TonyPynes's topic in General Mooney Talk
I would cash the money and rent Cessnas for a little while...when things are settled then I would shop for an aircraft. Yves -
We had such an event at my field last fall. I was going to the airport to check something in the logbook and perhaps do a short flight. When I got closer I noticed a Mooney in the fence with fire trucks around. Through the grapevines, I learned that the pilot forgot to remove the cowl plugs and aborted the takeoff but too late. I am looking for some links or report on this and will post them when I find them. Yves
