  1. Zane, arrange your arrival time to be right after the caravan. I am pretty sure you would be allowed to park with the group. Put a bunch of Mooney owners together and I bet this will be much fun. As far as site stuff, others will have to comment because this is my first time there. Yves
  2. Banjo, is the around the world trip cancelled? Yves
  3. Make sure you come say hi. We'll be with the Caravan group (if the weather cooperates!) My wife is a bit upset that camp fires would not be allowed... but I understand. Even if you would make it safe...all you need is a rogue spark flying away and there can go a half million dollar plane and the surroundings. This is a liability no one would like to have. For drinks, if they allow it, we'll bring some "real stuff" from Quebec... those who come say hi early will be able to taste :-) Yves
  4. Martin, I noticed on your picture... the Canadian weather is not shown... we are really in the soup now here. Foreflight does show it. Yves
  5. This anomaly shows up at 11:20 AM, centered just south of Dover... Yves
  6. Anyone have seen something similar on Foreflight? Looks like a bug to me. Yves
  7. Welcome aboard! Yves
  8. Scott, what date in september? Me too 50 then. Yves
  9. I saw that one from close about three years ago. It is actually an A-12... I paid a visit to the Blackbird airpark CA a couple of years ago. I also saw the A-12 at the California Science center...I guess this is all I can feed my thirst with. http://www.sr-71.org/blackbird/locations.php Yves
  10. I always kept mine current since I got it 16 years ago. I realized that when away from home, having good time with family and friends, having the option to land at night prevents having to rush to get back before dark. Note that Canadian rules are different. We have to do 5 take offs and landings at night in the last 6 months in order to be allowed to take passengers. Yves
  11. I don't think that the SR-71 is still flying. By all means if someone is aware of any SR-71 taking off from somewhere let me know... I will take a week off work and go see this thing get off. I am a huge fan of the skunk works stories, do worship Kelly Johnson. I did not learn about those fantastic airplanes until after they were grounded...never saw one fly except on TV. If the F-22 and F-35 report 60K ceiling... I would be surprised if they could sustain 70K in cruise... the type of mission they are design for needs very good efficiency at low level. I do not think you can have both... it is one or the other... Yves
  12. It has to do with radiation pattern of the antennas they use. They don't want to waste energy up in the air because most of their customers have their feet on the ground... Something else that may matter is by being so high, you probably hit several cells simultaneously. Depending on the channel re-use plan that they have, it is possible that this prevents proper connection. Yves
  13. I am on the market to acquire either a 430W or 480 to put in my Mooney. Several told me a few years ago that they would drop in price when the new series come about however I am still waiting and have not seen any significant drop. My budget is limited enough that I am now considering just adding conventional equipement to make my bird legal for IFR in Canada (rules are different here, you need a backup unit absolutely). Yves
  14. I agree with your comments. But using single channel (packet switching) has limits that would easily be reached by such systems. At home, I have Internet via a private Wifi provider and when the traffic increases (between 8PM and 10PM), when all the neibourhood teenagers, their parents and so on get on the waves, the throughput drops dramatically. It slows down enough that I have to do something else. Check my posts times and you'll see that I rarely manage to post anything at that time. Internet via radio waves has several challenges that do not appear on fiber links... we'll see. Yves
  15. The TR-1 (U2) is flying around those heights I think. Yves
  16. I would be really surprised if they could pack enough electronics in there to provide high level of service. There are multiple challenges they face, one of them is channel re-use. The cellular network has the advantage to be able to limit (to a certain extend) the coverage they provide. When a cell reaches its technical limit, it is splitted into smaller cells. Having those things high up in the air provides more coverage thus more potential hits by subscribers which will in turn lower the speed each users can use... this is a pilot program still... however Google has very deep pockets. Slow speed Internet is definitely better than no service at all. Yves
  17. If I recall right (from memory when I was teaching that stuff), cross polarization gives an attenuation of 17 db. Piloto is right about the cable loss, however I do not think that it would be as bad as 3db... I would check the chart for the coax in question. I would be really surprised if these antenna designers would allow a worse SWR ratio than competition...most claim SWR better than 2 with is about 89% power transmitted and 11% reflected. Do they usually put two antennas? One in the right and one in the left wingtips? That would possibly help the radiation pattern but make it harder to tune. Yves
  18. TX power shall not change however, ratiation pattern (shape of where the signal is distributed) is something to check. Yves
  19. Andrew and I this morning (June 15th). Ned is away! Yves
  20. Try spraying silicone after every flight for a while. See if this improves it. We did that several years ago when we were in the same situation and it worked fine. Yves
  21. In Canada we have no choice. The regs say it has to be done every 10 years. Mine is due in two years. Wondering why the regs are different. Perhaps because of cold temperature operations? Would be nice to find out if leaking props happen more from the northern states? Yves
  22. coldav8r, Where will you base your aircraft? Yves
  23. Welcome aboard! Yves.
  24. Shh..t I will not be able to do this procedure here! Dollar bills have been replaced by coins. And this year, larger cuts are made of some form of plastic... Yves
  25. Don't forget to clean-up after. When others were flying. the Mooney, kids dropping crumbles attracted families of mice into the airplane when parked!
