  1. You and me, both. I’m going to have all of my antenna cables replaced in my Rocket. Take note of the ones by your left knee. Mine had inline couplings there, one of their crimped collars had come loose and corrosion had formed under it. I was billed hundreds of dollars for diagnostics by the avionics shop and they failed to spot that one. A couple easy things to check are to verify you’ve got continuity between the center and ground from the radio cage, and then disconnect the antenna and verify it’s open to ensure you don’t have a short in the coax somewhere. Also verify you don’t have any unterminated junction boxes sitting around broadcasting harmonics into your airplane.
  2. All trainers are selling like mad. That will reflect in an increase in demand of higher performance GA aircraft with the bottom end going away. Why pay $60k for a run out 172 when you can get a decent m20f for that same price? If the trend continues, I suspect vintage Mooneys and Bonanzas to see a price spike. There are weird economics afoot. Combine that with interest rates around 4% on financing, that translates to the same payment for 100k that would’ve been for an 80k loan 8 years ago, and they’re giving those loans to more people — and many people buy based on what the payment will be, not the purchase price.
  3. Pretty much just the Charlie weights for the tail (m20k) and I did the same with purchasing the max gross STC from Rocket. I didn’t care to get either right away, but I’m a firm believer in making hay while the sun shines when there’s a chance something will go offline.
  4. This is why I bought everything I thought I might need, such as my Charlie weights.
  5. What’s the easiest way to clean lead off the belly of a Mooney?
  6. Perhaps we would see the composition of our government change significantly if it were required for voting.
  7. The reason I ask is that I know there is the potential to stall the tail on the long bodies. The technique I use with the rudder will still track straight as it’s essentially a forward slip. At the extreme, it’s like a hockey stop, and I’ve only gone full-in like that when I had my engine failure — when fast approaching trees and houses, your risk profile changes.
  8. Just note, and I don’t know if they’re similar, but a Piper had an engine failure on takeoff recently that ended up in the drink from KTPF where someone used the wrong hose for induction and it collapsed.
  9. I’ve seen a lot of Mooney pilots land by holding off the runway until the plane plops down, resulting in what looks like a hard landing. When I land my m20f and rocket, I tend to use a touch of rudder and back pressure in the flare and let off of both as I sink. The result is frequently a smooth landing as the loading of the wing shortens how much the plane floats and, at the same time, unloading it as the plane settles keeps it from accelerating and dropping hard onto the mains. Does this same technique work with the long bodies?
  10. Any chance you could post a photo from the inside or of the door open for contrast with the outside? Every photo I see of gray I’m looking through two windows.
  11. I honestly don’t really notice any difference between my two planes in Florida. Tint or no tint, it’s hot. On the ground, the cool scoop makes the biggest difference.
  12. Use a snap-on 3/4” wrench OEXL. Cheap ones won’t fit well and you lose a lot of leverage in flex.
  13. Being in Florida, it doesn’t seem to matter. Hopefully in a month or two I’ll have my air conditioning ready for testing.
  14. I hate the glass on my Rocket. It’s a tad foggy and tinted. Compared to my m20f which is crystal clear and enjoyable to look out of. The concern I have with going to clear is UV exposure up in the flight levels. I’m thinking of cutting reusable stick-on tint panels to size and installing them so I can have both some tint, but also enjoy the views at night and when sight-seeing down low. The current tinting in the Windows is inadequate for flying over cloud tops at 240. Thoughts?
  15. I like that I can text him when I need something.
  16. Should be a resistor that looks like a hot dog by your knee. Mine supposedly wasn’t working in my rocket and it ended up being a combination of the batteries and fuel pump failing. Old fuel pump showed maybe 3gph on prime. New one is around 18gph.

  18. That’s like that quote from Merkel: “Humanity knows no limits”
  19. On a related note: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/05/01/magazine/remington-guns-jobs-huntsville.html I’m still trying to figure out what to do for when the chickens come home to roost.
  20. You can’t seize power unless there’s a crisis. Those who learn from history are doomed to watch the masses repeat it.
  21. I’ve been holding on to the fingerprint phone for a while because IPhone X users tell me they won’t unlock with a headset on. Does facial recognition work?
  22. Get an engine monitor. I resisted for years myself. If you must, think of it as an amortized investment. I had a high oil temp reading on my m20f’s temp gauge. After precautionary landings and nearly leaving it behind, I noticed the needle didn’t drop to zero when I powered off. I pushed firmly with my thumb and discovered it was a poor connection. Oil temp and pressure generally are inversely related. If you see one dropping and the other remaining constant, but still in the green, start with verifying your instruments.
