  1. As I understand the square tip has quite vibration through low RPM that the rounded tip doesn't.
  2. If I were the conventional wisdom unicorn and I could come up with my own approval process for avionics, which would I choose? Remember this is from a common sense standpoint only. A. TSO with specific testing conditions on a very few n units during a short time. B. Field data from thousands of units in real world conditions over a long duration. I'd choose B. Let the experimental guys experiment and then use the data to port the experiments to the certificated world. It is the only path forward for these aging airframes.
  3. The optimal throttle configuration in my book would be quadrant style throttle lever and vernier push pull for prop and mixture. Best part? Strategic positioning of the eyeball vent on the pilots side. I have no idea if that started with the J or not.
  4. We must have gotten lead poisoning along the way. The condition only worsens with time.
  5. Well shoot- someone could take the concept of a M20 and truly build a composite aircraft. I'm just daydreaming but start with a medium body design. Keep the airfoil. Keep the backwards stab. Build the wing in carbon fiber. Fuselage carbon fiber. Dual entry with mid position doors to ease passenger access. Minor changes for aerodynamic improvements. Significant weight savings. Turbo Diesel engine? BRS plus maybe a bit of useful load in fuel capacity decrease with an even more efficient engine which would be offset by a heavier engine. But... That would be a cool plane. Like an RV 10 but it wouldn't look like it came out of a box at toys r us.
  6. Toms suggestion is great.
  7. Now one of the most important things you can do is get your instrument rating. What a great story and congratulations ! Edit. Also don't take a Mooney to a full stall intentionally. That's just my opinion. It doesn't behave like an archer in a stall.
  8. Also have to work this weekend. But ... DeeDee is coming back with some glossy new lipstick early next week :-)
  9. Plane plastics has most interior plastic parts.
  10. It's not yet available.
  11. If it's squirlly and you will be landing with a stiff cross wind, disregard the pattern direction of possible. It's safer to turn with a headwind on base rather than a tailwind on base to avoid overshoot and the temptation to overbank and auger it in turning base to final.
  12. That sure is pretty.
  13. For one of them you need sunblock. And maybe bifocals.
  14. Wheel well is probably one of the mist important places to have covered with paint. There really important stuff down there relating to your spar and fuel tanks. A bunch of dirt gets thrown up by your tires and lands firmly in there. Dirt carries with it salts and moisture which is a setup for corrosion. Clean often with alcohol after you get it covered. Oh oh and please wear a respirator. All sorts of nasty organic chemical stuff wants to be in the same place as your head. Experience talking.
  15. Don't forget to look down on the downwind at traffic pattern altitude - there might be a Baron overtaking you from below.
  16. I did my gear well with the following: Tape and mask everything thorough cleaning more cleaning clean with solvent (spirits or isopropyl) scuff with scotchbrite Clean again with solvent etching primer epoxy would be best. I used rattle can enamel and got great results. Figured it just needed to hold up. Not look pretty.
  17. Try this. It works.
  18. I helped my local flight school sell rides at an airshow. The airshow featured the oldest surviving woman in America who was still flying. She had this pristine red C140 tail dragger that she flew in. There was a celebration and she gave a speech. On the way out she taxied into a lancair at the hold short bars. The lancair lost his tail. Literally. Nobody hurt. High nose, low tail accident of sorts. Lesson: if ever asked to give a speech at a transportation event, Murhpy's law would suggest finding an alternative mode of transportation, Apparently Edward Murphy was a real jerk.
  19. Two more things I'm thinking about 1) the GTX 345 has a blind encoder available that is about the size of a quarter and plumbs into the static line. Once it's installed no need for static check. On the last two IFR checks I've been told my encoding altimeter only has X number of years on it. They are expensive to overhaul / replace. It seems that it could get easily replaced with a standard altimeter and a blind encoded. If going with the 345 it would also mean else installation time for plumbing and wiring another blind encoder. 2) the transponder choice plays into the GPS choice. I'm in the 430-non WAAS boat right now. It seems that at least I'd get some additional capability for LPV by doing a panel mount WAAS solution. I'm also a heavy user of the iPad. Right now it seems like a 430W / FS210 / Trig guts unit (TT31/KT74/AXP340) would be the right choice and be the best value... For right now. An AXP340 would allow both for the use of Garmin boxes now and an IFD 540 when I can afford to splurge on that. A little bit more expensive now, but some additional flexibility built in as well. Best of all it's a direct slide in for my KT76A. From what I am reading there is no STC for use of a Avidyne GPS as a WAAS source for KT74, TT31 or GTX345 boxes. Anyone else with a non-WAAS box who flies IFR and does not have an unlimited avionics budget thinking about how to get some utility / value in an upgrade that they'd probably not do otherwise?
  20. Stinkypants could do that no problem. Here is the map of my 2700 nm cross country adventure when I brought N201QH home.
  21. I'd I were the owner I would involve an independent MSC that has done that type of repair before (Lasar, Top Gun, DMax, Hen Web) and get an estimate. It may come down to how much "surgery" they recommend. I'm sure m20Doc and Turbo as well as others will give some details as to what replacing a skin would involve. Regardless the damage should be covered by the shop or their insurance as they see fit. Are you planning on selling or is this forever plane? Does down time or distance from a capable shop matter to you?
  22. Are there additional senders in the Monroy tanks or do they drain to and are measured by the main senders? I'm just curious as to the design. Especially in the later Model J's that have the GW increase STC seems like a lot of performance enhancing capabilities.
  23. An idea of the compensation for not for profit hospital leadership in Western Pennsylvania. http://www.post-gazette.com/business/healthcare-business/2016/05/13/UPMC-CEO-Jeffrey-Romoff-earned-6-4-million-in-fiscal-2015/stories/201605130194
  24. Who was that guy in the A model who flew from San Diego to Savannah non stop?
  25. IIRC flight aware pulls the radar from about the half way point in the track log. It does look like there are some definitive dodges in there.
