  1. While removing my pressurized mags for 500 hr inspection, one mag's bleed orifice had this screw hole tapped into it. My jpi930 rpm pick-up is a gasket style which is located under this. I am assuming there was some sort of pick-up screwed into it, but what? Was that how Mooney connected the panel RPM gauge? I'm going to replace it, but was curious.
  2. I dealt with this issue 2 years ago. It's going to be either battery, starter, or starter adapter. Some good suggestions on checking battery, or you could try using an external power plug to see if that changes anything. Finding out whether it's the starter or adapter is going to be more difficult. I replaced the starter first because it was easier and cheaper. The new starter sounded a lot better, but didn't fix the problem. Replacing an adapter is fairly major surgery, but on the 231 it's easier because you don't have the belt driven alternator and associated pulley & brackets. If you do have to replace the adapter, I strongly recommend removing the mags ( if they're close to the 500 hour inspection, and, r/r the engine driven alternator and drive bushing. If you don't, Murphy's law dictates that these items will fail shortly after putting everything back together. Getting at these items later will be a total PIA. i used custom airmotive to overhaul the starter adapter. They charged about $1k. Starting has been fine since. Best Jack
  3. Don Kaye has a nice website donkaye.com. Worth a look.
  4. I absolutely agree. You don't have to blaze a new trail, just improve on what's being done. The Ultra's are a superior product, the market just has to be sold.
  5. Because, There are a lot of people who can afford a $1MM toy, and they currently have access to a turbine of some sort. They get a brand new, sleek, sexy, fast low wing certified plane that doesn't fly like a truck. This is a BIG job for the CEO. Cirrus has done a very good job with this part of their business plan.
  6. From the album: #jackn's album

Just a nice flight with the wife.
  7. It may be a bug in the GP app. I have a gtx345, gtn750, & GP. I also have the red X through the tower icon on GP, although it's fine on the 750. Both displays are getting traffic info from the same source (gtx345). I know I'm seeing tis-b on GP and traffic targets match for both devices. Garmin support seemed confused, so pushed me back to the installer. I haven't had the time yet to deal with this, and Garmin put out a new software update that I haven't yet tried.
  8. I've flown in/out of ASE many times. One time I had the stuff scared out of me when I did the head banging thing at 15,000'. Glad I was in a Mooney, in a Bo I would have been looking at a cracked spar for sure. Anyway, I'm sitting in LGA now because the weather out there looks challenging. They're saying the storm of the decade is going to hit The Sierras, Then on to CO.
  9. I really don't like tailwind take-offs in my Mooney. In the summer, when the control tower is in operation and tailwind is 5 kts or so, we'll get assigned rwy 28 just to fit in with the jet traffic. It may be me, but doing so in a Cessna or Bo doesn't seem too bad. Maybe it's the laminar flow wing, but it feels I'm eating up a lot of runway getting off.
  10. A guy I know just sent his trio-360lb to Zepher for tear down & IRAN. He was pleased with their work.
  11. fwiw, I'm an engineer, or was until I retired.
  12. Here's some data. On landing TiT is low, but turbo temp is probably still high. When you turn off the runway, TiT goes back up and stays up until you do the cool down. I'm going to continue to do my usual cool down.
  13. This is all I have. Unfortunately, I cannot find the E-Mail from CAV. If you call their support number, I'm sure they can send it to you.
  14. Also, the nozzle can get into an harmonic vibration and break. This happened to mine, the fix is a little bit of prc at the base of the nozzle, I noticed you don't have it done. CAV sent me the instructions on how to do it. It's a known issue.
  15. Heading out to Aspen in a few weeks for the winter. I know what you mean about the turbulence. I've hit some of the worst bumps out there. Still, I'm looking forward to it. Hope to spend some time out in CA also. Glad you're keeping it.
  16. Thanks Paul, makes sense. Ki-256 use teflon tape normally for the installation. Don't use for fuel system. Anyway, came from the factory in 1987 that way.
  17. It's located on the back of my ki-256 ai. Looks like a vacuum switch. Does it shut off The a/p if vacuum is lost?
  18. There is a spring that keeps the gear up and tight, is with mine. Maybe you just pulled the spring out of shape. It's easy to replace. Too bad you don't have any before pictures, maybe you mx would know.
  19. Just curious. How much are they, the outer & middle door?
  20. Same issue with mine, also couple of sectional & Tac charts expired as well.
  21. Colder temps may be giving you higher cylinder pressures, does in my turbo engine. Your cylinders may be fine, but some rings may be worn. This would account for varying compression test results. The oil color should stay relatively clear for 20 hrs. If not you may be getting blow by at the higher pressures.
  22. They've just redrawn the TFR on the Hudson River. For a portion, both the northbound and southbound must fly on the West side of the river. Who comes up with this stuff??
  23. Have you seen all the anti-democracy protesters in the streets?
  24. When I top my tanks, if I wait a few seconds and am patient, I can get a lot more fuel in. Also, when I'm topping just the mains, I have my Jpi fuel totalizer set to 72 gallons for full. That seems to be about right for me.
