Mooney Formation Aero-Camping in Canadian Wilderness

Great video as usual! -
That sounds like my issue. Plane flies just fine - FD just dances around with no effect on flight.

Thank you. I will.

Hi Xavier. Only US Citizens or resident aliens are permitted to register aircraft in the US registry (regardless of where the aircraft is based) with a couple of limited exceptions that do not apply to your situation. The registration eligibility has to do with citizenship of the owner not the location of the aircraft (in compliance with ICAO standards) so unfortunately you will have to use a U.S. owner trustee to hold legal title to the aircraft.

My Flight Director does this occasional dance when active. There is no effect on the autopilot or the underlying King AI. Just the FD dancing away on it own. I had the avionics shop look at the connections and all were solid and secure. The AI is pretty solid and the autopilot has no issues whatsoever so I tend to think it's localized to the actual FD mechanism itself which is translating the commands - not the other way around. Any idea what could cause this behavior? 20190807_145938000_iOS.MOV

flight simulator for Mooney M203 with a Garmin 530
elimansour replied to Alyair's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
You need to check out the RealSimGear website. They make realistic gps simulator hardware, which when coupled with X Plane can have you doing all the practice approaches at home on a realistic 530. For additional realism, try Pilot Edge for live ATC with real controllers. The combination is quite realistic and immersive. You can get a good Mooney model for the simulator for the Mooney from the X-Plane.org website. Have fun!! -
That’s a beautiful Mooney!! Welcoming to the community and looking forward to hearing about your adventures in Mooneyland!!

Do you or have you named your plane?

My son named our Mooney: Planey McPlane Face! -
Beautiful Mooney. Congratulations!!

It's kind of stated in an indirect fashion in paragraph 3: 3. Sellers warrant that the Aircraft will be free and clear of all outstanding financial obligations, liens, and encumbrances at the time of Closing. The agreement is fairly seller favorable and should be reviewed by legal counsel - maybe even start off with a better form. Second the advice to go to AOPA legal. I think AOPA even has purchase agreement form on their website. Jimmy also has a good form - maybe if you ask nicely he might give you a copy?

West Coast Mooney Club- Wings Over Camarillo Airshow/ Fly-In

I have a ticket and will be there. Looking forward to it. -
I've owned a Cirrus previously. Back in 2008, I bought a 6 year old SR20. It was a nice looking, almost new aircraft with low hours (300ish) and my wife loved the room and comfort of the cabin. Yes, it had great ramp appeal, looked modern, did 155kts and could go reasonably far without needing to refuel. Everything was great...except I really did not like how it flew. It just didn't feel right - at least to me - the SR20 (which is somewhat comparable to a J in performance) was really underpowered, easily overheated in the summer on the hot ramps in the Southwest and was a terrible climber. Oh, and it was not inexpensive to maintain - there were lots of service bulletins, many mandatory, which we had to comply with and the annuals fairly pricey. I realize this was one of the earlier Cirrri and that there were growing pains but it was not fun to own or really to fly. So after a little more than 3 years I sold it. And then came the biggest shock: in that 3 year period the plane lost almost $50K in value and took a long time to sell even though it was still less than 10 years old And had less than 1000SMOH. The main reason, it was a G1 and by that point Cirri were on G3 and just not as desirable. Lesson learned, Cirri don't seem to "retain" value near other aircraft because they get "refreshed" after only a couple of years with the latest gadgets and may not be as desirable to someone looking to buy a Cirrus. Fast forward to early last year, when I was looking to buy an aircraft, I researched what was out there, what could fit my mission (a regular commute of approx 700 miles round trip, so speed and efficiency were key), somewhat modern avionics (ADSB, autopilot, full featured WAAS GPS) and what I could afford and really the only plane that made sense was a late model J. I did not look for a Cirrus - new or used - although out of curiosity I found out that my prior Cirrus had again sold in the meantime (upgraded to WAAS GPSs and with a fresh parachute repack) for less than I sold it for - so the guy that bought it did not do too well either. I had been flying Bonanzas, high performance C and P models in the meantime but was not too keen on any of them - the Mooney just made more sense. So late last year, I bought a beautiful 98 J (the last 201 serial number ever built) after a long search and have been very happy with the performance, comfort and just how nice it flies. I'm preaching to the choir here I'm sure LOL. It is a totally different experience than the Cirrus was in all ways. My wife was not convinced at first - she missed the Cirrus cabin and questioned the size of the Mooney but after a family vacation in the plane she was sold. She thought it was just as comfortable and that it seemed to perform better (it did!). So I am definitely in the Mooney camp! Would I buy a new Mooney? I'm not sure - but that's more because I don't like to get the depreciation hit on anything new. Would I buy a lightly used Acclaim? Most definitely!! I am just not a new plane/ car/ boat purchaser when a lightly used one is as good but costs much less - but more than that it's just not that different from a brand new one. I think the reason Cirrus is outselling Mooney, Beech, Cessna is that it appeals to a different kind of buyer: someone who wants to have the latest in technology, alleged safety, cabin goodies etc. and who is not satisfied with the couple of year older/ prior generation Cirrus. Why doesn't that buyer get a new Mooney? Because a couple of year older Mooney can be bought with equivalent equipment and performance at a lower cost without much difference. There just isn't a big delta in what you get in a lightly used Acclaim vs a new Acclaim. So not much motivation to buy new unless you just have to have new plane smell. Cirrus' constantly changing their models and bringing out new generations every couple of years, while sucking for Cirrus owners who see their resale value plummet, is brilliant to capture the high end buyer who wants the latest because a lightly used one is not the same as the new ones. In that strategy, by marketing to that buyer and highlighting the new stuff which can't be had with a used one they lock the buyer in. Mooney's advertising may convince someone to buy a Mooney but doesn't have to be a new one...that's the problem. There's just not that much difference. Ok the new pilot side door is definitely cool - but not sure it's a big enough change. So who is the target for a new Mooney? Other than a Mooney purist /Mooniac who can afford one, it's probably a pilot who can use it for business, wants the performance uptick over a Cirrus and who can use the tax benefits - it's clearly not most of us who like the economical choice of buying used and letting someone else take the economic depreciation hit on a new plane.

BK to acquire Tru Trak announcement?
elimansour replied to Oldguy's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
It could be a good thing, maybe Honeywell is ready to get serious with its BK division for GA. After years of nothing happening this and the Aerocruze announcement are welcome news. A little more competition/ upgrade options would be a good thing. -
Fuel Pressure Fluctuating PIREP
elimansour replied to elimansour's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
UPDATE - finished 2 flights and 6 hours of flight time - I have not seen the fluctuations again...so I am stumped about what caused them in the first place or if it was fixed by the mechanic tightening bundles and applying stabilant 22 to the plugs. Hopefully it is the latter and maybe there was something loose in the indication system... -
Fuel Pressure Fluctuating PIREP
elimansour replied to elimansour's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
UPDATE - I just got the plane back after the oil change. The mechanic could not replicate the issue. He inspected all wiring and fuel plumbing/ plugs and could not find any issues. He secured the relevant wire bundles and applied stabilant 22 to the plugs. When taxiing back today I also saw steady fuel pressure w/o fluctuations. Will have to see how it goes on the next flight... -
That was great! Would love to try that some day...thank you for the inspiration!

Fuel Pressure Fluctuating PIREP
elimansour replied to elimansour's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I typically cruise 9-12K. This occurred yesterday at 9K. When I turned on the boost pump it went back to 28psi and stayed there solid. I spoke to the mechanic this morning and he will be checking but he thinks because there were no other indications of something wrong (no engine surging, fuel flow, fluctuations, the gauge being solid when boost pump is on, etc.), it is not likely to be air trapped in the lines or a mechanical issue but perhaps an indicator issue. He will be troubleshooting and I will report findings. It was a bit strange to see it go down so low when it had been right at 28psi for the last 50 hours since the enginge OH. -
Hi all. I had a strange fuel fluctuation on the fuel pressure in my J. Engine is 50SMOH and fuel pump was replaced with new at engine OH. I noticed the fuel start to fluctuate as soon as I turned off the boost pump on climb. Here is a short video - you will see the pressure go back at the end as I turned the boost pump back on to keep from having pressure go in the red. Fuel Pressure Fluctuation Some additional facts. This was the first time I saw this behaviour from the fuel pressure. Previously pressure was always near the top of the green. Temp was 92 and aircraft was fueled to top off earlier in the day (when it was cooler). Plane was outside all day. I noticed fuel tanks were really full when I did the pre-flight, in fact, there was fuel seeping from the overflow below the wing. The fluctuations would occur randomly and in a couple of instances required boost pump use to keep from getting too low. The fluctuations were jerky - not smooth and could vary from 28 down to 16 and jerk back up in a second. The really bad fluctuations seemed to stop after about 1 hour in the flight and only returned a couple of times after - but never getting so low as necessitating boost pump use. Luckily, I had an oil change scheduled today so will also be speaking to the mechanic about this but I wanted to share with the Mooney collective and see if anyone has experienced this previously. As this was happening thoughts varied from vapor lock or engine driven fuel pump issues or possibly air in the lines. Will report back what the mechanic says.

Story - Near Midair with same Cirrus TWICE
elimansour replied to 201er's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
This is upsetting - the Cirrus driver had a cavalier attitude and did not seem to realize that he is not just endangering you but also himself. Cutting you off was just a total d$#k move especially when you were on base and announcing your intentions. Giving him a wide berth, both in the air and on the ground, was the best move you made. Not worth arguing with him - I'm sure he would have ignored you or given you attitude. Sometimes you just can't change people with such a disregard for safety, courtesy and common sense...just stay away from them...you'll read about them at some point as their lack respect for the risks involved will catch up with them. Glad you are safe.
