  1. I actually still have a RedHat 7.2 (Enigma) box running some back-end stuff... Not RHEL 7.2, RedHat 7.2. Yes, in a VM, yes, isolated from any network except from one local IP on a single port, but I probably still have the hardware it came off of in the attic somewhere, and it would boot up. They don't make them like they used to
  2. Well, TBH I didn't see anyone say he wasn't But who am I to speak, I can't even seem to order parts at the right time. Hopefully I ordered the correct stuff...
  3. @Austintatious - do you recall what OAT / type of cloud you got this in? Something anyone would ever venture into in a Mooney?
  4. Wouldn't VOR and DME be preferable to ADF? I'm actually planning on removing an ADF to make room for an EDM...
  5. At a risk of sounding silly - this is for the Surefly to know where TDC is, not to tell it when to fire, right?
  6. You mean to the right of the red circle in the first photo? Genuinely asking so I know what to look for, because otherwise it looks to my untrained eye like it's mostly dirt and grease.
  7. Let us know how you like that GFC500, so we can feed our inner envies I was soooo hoping this wasn't a mixup and they knew what was coming from Garmin and it was all good.
  8. Is there a Mooney Pros branch in the EU?
  9. This. This is probably the most valuable lesson I learned this summer when getting acquainted with the Mooney.
  10. What is Garmin's G5 announcement scheduled for next week?
  11. To be fair, we did have our 8.33kHz radio nonsense and a mode-s requirement, but yes, definitely, the US is the 5000 lb gorilla in GA. We're also trying to catch up somewhat, with Trig as an example (which I'm sure sells much better in the EU than in the US).
  12. I believe it is still the case, and actually true for most any integrated glass cockpit solution. See notes 1, 2 and 3 in the July 2019 revision of the G5/Certified STC/AML (last page). Note 4 also excludes FIKI and G3X...
  13. @Yooper Rocketman - what AP is installed in the BE-36? Can you please confirm that the AP will be _fully_ driven by the new glass? As of right now, the G3X page says: G3X Touch will not support display of flight director (FD), autopilot modes or annunciations for non-Garmin autopilots. Consult your Authorized Garmin Dealer for more details. I guess that if you have e.g. a STEC which has its own electric attitude source it might work...
  14. But in his install the G3X will be the primary, not the G5.
  15. Garmin sez: For select aircraft equipped with G500 or G500 TXi, G5 can also be used as a standby flight instrument to those systems. What is surprising in @Yooper Rocketman's installation is that it will drive a legacy King autopilot.
  16. @alextstone - thanks for seeing this through and especially for reporting all the steps. I'm sure many folks will be spared much anguish and frustration.
  17. XKCD for those who haven't seen it. Explained here if anyone wants to do a "deep dive". And also something about being beaten by experience... ps. try hovering the cursor over the comic
  18. Just to be totally clear - I am more than OK with a requirement for an A&P/IA to sign off an update. I find making them available only through authorized dealers / service centers limiting and a factor in a purchase decision (although admittedly I did just buy a JPI).
  19. I consider a KFC+G5 setup a gateway drug for the GFC500 when the King stuff goes bad...
  20. Which seems like a borderline retarded policy, but oh well. I can understand the need for oversight of an A&P/IA for the updates, but not the need to go to an "authorized service center". Guess I'm just oversimplifying things.
  21. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it, eh?
  22. Isn't an INOP label meant to prevent this from happening?
  23. Well, the answer sounds like a "yes" - unless the "qualified" part of "A&P/IA" has some excessively strict requirements. If it just means an A&P/IA that is not afraid of a RS232 connection, then it's great. If it means "got blessed by Aspen after performing a secret ritual" then it's not much different from Garmin.
  24. Guys, just "don't feed the trolls" and "carry on" :-) In Polish we have this saying / proverb that a spoonful of wood tar will spoil a whole vat of honey. I think the English version is about flies and ointment. Let's not let them!
  25. @alextstone - thank you for the follow-up. I expect to be faced with major avionics change decisions in the coming years, so every little bit of real world info helps. A question - by "I installed" you actually mean that Aspen updates can indeed, at least for the most part, be installed by the user / in the field, without an avionics shop deemed by the vendor as worthy to not mess up? To me it would be a major advantage. I believe Avidyne updates for the IFDs are also distributed in a similar fashion, can anyone confirm?
