Avidyne WiFi/BT Failure General Announcement
EricJ replied to DualRatedFlyer's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
FWIW, when mine was first installed the ADSB-in didn't work at all. According to the installer it was all wired up according to the instructions, but it didn't work beyond setting a fault. The story I got from the shop was that an Avidyne (non-technical) rep had been by and even taken some of them to lunch, but when they tried to get technical support to solve the problem they got nowhere. The shop eventually punted and wired it up like it was a legacy GNS530 (which the Avidyne is plug-compatible with) and now it seems to function like it should except that the FF Ranger throws faults sometimes. It still works fine when it throws the faults, it's just annoying. I suspect they had to move some of the serial busses around to do that, and that may cost me trouble later if I try to expand things. I had called Avidyne myself previously about a different issue during installation and got very good help. I don't know why the support seems patchy other than they're probably overloaded. -
Avidyne WiFi/BT Failure General Announcement

What are you not getting? Are you getting traffic and METARS? I did determine that I do get METARs, and I get weather displayed on the screen when we have it. I don't think I had to do anything special to set that up, but maybe the installer had already done something. My FF Ranger traffic thingie is still a little wonky, but other than throwing fault warnings once in a while seems to be working fine. The weird part is that the fault warnings seem to be position dependent, e.g., I get them when I go through certain spaces, and other times it's fine. -

The WiFi/BT on my IFD540 was DOA on installation. It'd configure, you could "allow" it, it appeared at the top of the screen, but it basically didn't exist and wouldn't connect to anything. In my case they sent the box back to Avidyne to be fixed. The shop checked it on reinstallation and said it was all working. I've since used the BT keyboard with it, but personally haven't tested the WiFi since it's been back. I need to do that. -
In the early Mooneys there was a fuel tank under the rear seat, too.

Remember to match the POH Number to the aircraft serial number. e.g., the early Js are POH 1220 up to SN 24-0377. I believe the latest rev of 1220 is 1220G. If that's not the one on Mooneyspace there are copies available elsewhere out there on the intartubes.

I'd encourage build. They don't make those any more and the ones with good bones could use a rescue.

I'm guessing the vernatherm is not a very precision device as it doesn't really do much to keep oil temps above minimum, no?

How would you do on this Instrument Checkride?
EricJ replied to donkaye, MCFI's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
My autopilot was inop during my IR checkride, so I didn't get to see how it might be handled on a typical checkride. My G5 HSI was newly installed, though, and when the examiner "failed" my AI just prior to flying an LPV approach, while I was fine flying without it I mentioned (even though I'd never practiced it), that in IMC with an actual AI failure I'd switch the G5 to PFD mode. He indicated that was fine and I could do that if I wanted to...so I did. After about a half minute staring at an instrument I'd essentially never used before I decided that that was probably not the best time to learn it, so I switched it back to the HSI mode and completed the approach. He was fine with that, too. -

I bought one of these on sale at Harbor Freight for $88. The actual reason for the timing that we bought it was because the gas cap, coincidentally, will fit on a PA-28. Not that that was ever actually done in a pinch on a weekend when nobody had one and one got left off during a refueling stop, of course. https://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engine-generators/900-max-starting700-running-watts-2-hp-63cc-2-cycle-gas-generator-epacarb-63025.html We've used it at our mine and the cabin a couple times and it's actually a nice little unit and not noisy at all. I thought it was going to be noisy since it's a 2-stroke, but it's not.

Late Fs and early Js share a lot of components, including in the panel.

I went to Staples and just found something close enough.

Yes, it's being used as a splitter. If you were transmitting on both GS and VOR/LOC bands through the antenna port, i.e., the signals were going out rather than in, it'd be functioning as a diplexer. Usually the specs for a diplexer are much different than for a typical splitter application, like it has to handle a lot more power, so they're not often labelled like that. IMHO, it's confusing to do that, but not incorrect. Anyway, if that whole system used to work and just isn't any more, I think you're on the right debug path. If the GS antenna that you're waiting for works, then it's something in the other part of the signal path. You could get a BNC barrel and connect the antenna directly to one of the GS inputs and test that directly just to make sure the antenna and cabling are okay, but nothing else would be expected to work during that test. You could also get a known-good 3dB splitter (even a plebian home-cable splitter would work) and connect two things at once instead of just one. If you can mess with it while flying (not necessarily recommending that, just saying if it is easy it's something to consider), swap 'em around and see what happens. You should be able to isolate whether it is the splitter, or the cabling/antenna. BNC inside (female-female) barrel connector, should be obtainable at nearby stuff store: https://www.amazon.com/CNE41862-Barrel-Connector-Coupler-Female/dp/B00IPZBL7I That's an "inside" barrel, or female-female. The male-male is an "outside" barrel. Edit: To answer your earlier question, it shouldn't hurt anything to connect the GS output to the VOR input or vice-versa.

What are the inputs and outputs to the box/device you're looking at that you're calling a diplexer? Unless there's a transmitter involved in the airplane somewhere, it shouldn't be a diplexer, just a splitter/filter. The glideslope is at a higher frequency than the VOR/LOC (which are in the same band), so if the "splitter", or whatever it is, also has some filter functions it may matter what is plugged into which port. Pics would probably help, and/or a part number of the device. What is plugged into the antenna input side of the device may matter as well.

Ice hole. aka whistle slot. The result of an AD for Cessnas and Mooneys with bladders, and accepted practice for many airplanes these days. The aluminum breather end on my airplane has no hole, so I cut one in the hose as per the AD (even though I don't have bladders). It's making a small mess inside the cowl, but I'm a little reluctant to delete the hole. I replaced mine a while back with Mil-6000 and took the time to cut a bird's mouth in it. It spews a little inside the cowling, so now I'm thinking of replacing it and not cutting the bird's mouth, but I'm a little hesitant. I'm guessing most installations don't have it?

Last week I thought I heard one of the local car dealers advertising a "Huge urine sale!" That would've been perfect for this. Sadly, it turned out to be a year-end sale. So disappointing.

I'd triple check the STC before swapping wingtips and inverting the antenna. That may adversely impact the antenna pattern. If it wasn't tested/certified that way it may not be allowed.

Likely consequences of wandering 1/4 mile into class D

I heard it during a local Wings/FAAST meeting, either from a controller or one of the Scottsdale FSDO people, I don't recall which. The context was about Phoenix bravo airspace in particular. -
+1 on the Overcasters: http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/531 For whatever reason I cannot use foggles or the other typical "view limiting devices" while wearing my glasses with my progressive prescription. It's just not practical for me to make it work. The overcasters work fine, though. I would caution that you have to be careful to take reasonable care of them. If they get left in the sun they'll curl up like a potato chip in short order.
