  1. In reality I set my DG to the taxiway which is parallel to the runway I am using and then again using the runway I am taking off from. I have flown twice with no DG in the WX with my Mag compass only, but in modern times, I don't hesitate to turn on my IPAD and use the AHARS. Electrons fail, hear that all the time. How about all the juice leaking out of your mag compass? Any failure is not good, but it's time to get alternatives so we are not grounded for an ancient piece of equipment.
  2. Liquid compasses were next adapted for aircraft. In 1909, Captain F.O. Creagh-Osborne, Superintendent of Compasses at the Admiralty, introduced his Creagh-Osborne aircraft compass, which used a mixture of alcohol and distilled water to damp the compass card.[97][98] After the success of this invention, Capt. Creagh-Osborne adapted his design to a much smaller pocket model[99] for individual use[100] by officers of artillery or infantry, receiving a patent in 1915. That's about how old the thinking is at the FAA!! Mag Compass should be an option in this century not a requirement, provided you have another means of navigation, which could be your CELL PHONE!! In 38 years of flight instructing I have only seen one DPE reject a plane for the mag compass. Not that he cared really but the compass deviation card fell out and was not visible. We found it on the floor, taped it to the mag compass, and he was happy!
  3. Agree, you have to know the field conditions. Last year at Recklaw I would not have flown in, at least 8 in of mud/soft grass!!
  4. This was Recklaw fly in 2020. I will admit it was not muddy like the previous year, but no problems this year. If you live in Texas ya gotta come to Recklaw 2021. https://s.real.com/DOBZoe
  5. Just replaced both mags in my 20C and similar problem. Mechanic ensured me he checked the timing thoroughly...guess what. He was a bit embarrassed but the timing was not set correctly. The plane sounded fine before the mag change but worse after. Timing is everything.
  6. That's my plane and the Photo above Canyon Lake was during some Formation flying and used on the cover of MAPA magazine last year. Mike
  7. Hector is the GURU at aerocomfort
  8. Addresses SAP crankshafts only not all crankshafts. Don't know which engines are affected.
  9. See you in March Duck
  10. Previous owner installed 3 blade for Ground Clearance (makes a difference) and climb performance. However the added weight did shift the CG forward to the point that I carry 70 LBS of ballast to keep it in the envelope. Battery is still forward.
  11. Bin there did that
  12. I called airpath compass and ordered a new compass, about $200. Leaked solved, Swung compass with IA, problem gone away.
  13. Correct me if I am wrong, but the reg actually says: 91.171 VOR equipment check for IFR operations. (a) No person may operate a civil aircraft under IFR using the VOR system of radio navigation unless the VOR equipment of that aircraft - (1) Is maintained, checked, and inspected under an approved procedure; or (2) Has been operationally checked within the preceding 30 days, and was found to be within the limits of the permissible indicated bearing error set forth in paragraph (b) or (c) of this section. Not using the VOR/flying Airways no check required. If you need to fly VOR approaches/Airways, then do the check. If any part of the approach requires a VOR then do the checks. Mike
  14. https://www.avweb.com/ownership/shock-cooling-myth-or-reality/ "I feel the need, the need for speed" or fly a c172.
  15. All the simulators at KHYI are gone. The building is closed and will reopen as part of Berry AviationCorp. Berry FBO will remain at the west end of the airport. Blackhound Aviation Flight School is still using the building as a place of operations. Sad

Fantastic WX and flying at KHYI this weekend. Thanks Bucko and all the mooney formation safety pilots.
  17. Put them in my 62 C and they are very nice. Works with my overhead dimmer.
  18. Does you Mooney have an AS indicator. Yellow band, green band , red tick for Vne that would be a start. Gear speed Vlo , Vx and Vy are not marked but in the POH verbage. The one speed you should know is Va. Good speed to be at in a mooney in turbulence with our wing loading; it might even be placarded.
  19. I keep 60 LBS of Ballast in back because my C is past forward CG limit when I am SOLO. All the new toys up front push the CG forward on many Mooney's. Recheck your W&B.
  20. Aero Comfort in San Antonio has constructed a few Glare shields. I got one for my C there 2 years ago . They had a template and even the snaps were in the right place. I don't know what other models they have done but you might give them a call.
