He had a tail wind but has lost that now and is gonna have a head wind the rest of the way. And yeah, he's not going very fast for an Acclaim. This is more like my 252 type speed.
-
Wow, that is cool. If it's got long range tanks option, it should be easily doable.

I'd be very interested as well. And if you don't want to share the CAD file, just tell me who to contact at the metal shop to make another set of the hardware. I have the same armrest on the pilots seat in my 252. But I removed it completely because the hardware is so worn that it was impossible to use the armrest.

I just built one myself using this... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JQRC93V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I little soldering, and I've got two ports one controlling my engine heater and one controlling a space heater in the cockpit. I put an ATT SIM card in it that costs about $100 per year for unlimited messages. I can turn either on or off with my phone and also check the status of either as well.

I used to own a very fast M20C. It was N6XM, but has since met the reaper and is no more. She was a fully modded C. She had once been owned by an Indy Car driver who did much like you did but without doing any of the work himself. She came with a crate full of receipts for over $100K of work just to the airframe to have fitted every know speed mod available. When I was in negotiations to buy her, I sent her to Don Maxwell for the pre-buy. He informed me later and has since told anyone who asks, that 6XM was the fastest C he's ever flown. I could consistently flight plan for 155 knots TAS and would get it.

Those Cessna's are better than our Mooneys in every possible way... until you leave the ground.

@kpaul makes a good point that my best mileage of 21+ is wind aided. So it's much like getting great mileage in the pickup truck while going down a hill. So I'll take the average which would be 18+ mpg. But as @Hank says, I also used to make long road trips and told myself I enjoyed them. I was proud of the fact that I'd driven every mile of interstates 10, 20, 40, 70, 80, and 90. But doing the same in a Mooney is soooooooo much better... for so many reasons... and the mileage isn't nearly as bad as most people think about airplanes.

I agree with @FoxMike. While APA is closest for you, I'd go to FTG as my second choice before COS. The drive up from Colorado Springs is not fun. Give me a shout when you're in the area. My Mooney is based at BJC which would be a third option for you, but a little further north. I know of an independent CFI at BJC but I'm sure there are plenty at APA and FTG as well.

We landed Friday about noon in Denver. It was severe clear down to about 700 ft AGL. Landing was 200 OVC fog, and 500 RVR with a 10 knots tail on touchdown. Unfortunately I couldn't log it. Some guy in a United uniform was though. We have a plan to fly the Mooney from Denver to Austin this coming Friday, weather permitting.

Fatal Cirrus accident last night in Vegas
gsxrpilot replied to kerry's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
I recently landed back at my home field, BJC in Denver. I'd lost the alternator and was on battery power. It was well after dark and we were coming in from the west. With a dark cockpit and invisible mountains close by, we had two iPads up. One with a VFR Sectional and one with SV on the screen. With that we had plenty of information of the terrain around us and made sure we were well clear. I never thought we were ever in any danger and we weren't. This has got to be the definition of a senseless tragedy. There are so many ways it could have been avoided. -
Why Mooney Shut Down The Factory - Opinion
gsxrpilot replied to Mooney217RN's topic in General Mooney Talk
This whole speculation is based on the premise that the Meijing Group expects or needs Mooney to be a profitable business or even just self supporting. I'll be that when this "trade war" with China is over, they'll be back in business. -
IFR Approach legal without ceiling on AWOS?
gsxrpilot replied to Oldguy's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Flight visibility is in the eye of the beholder... as they say At least for part 91 -
I used to be partners in an F33A... I'll take my 252 over it all day long. I find the Mooney much more comfortable in both front and back seats. The Mooney cabin is also wider so more shoulder room. Not only am I going faster on less gas, the race is really over when I skip the fuel stop the Bo has to make.

IFR Approach legal without ceiling on AWOS?
gsxrpilot replied to Oldguy's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
part 91, do it. If you see the runway environment at minimums, land, if not go missed. I landed at KOKC once when the big boys were holding, they didn't have enough RVR. It was fine for me and my little part 91 Mooney. -
I just switch to "normalized" when doing a mag check. Then the numbers don't make much difference.
-
You understand it correctly. The only difference with portrait mode is the lack of EGT/CHT numbers. I don't care about the EGT's so much, but I like having all CHT numbers on the screen all the time. I just don't want to have to scroll through screens. I want to see all my data all the time. I spend more time watching the engine monitor than any other instrument in my panel. The EDM 930 is only a larger screen. It was more important for me to have the screen on the left side of the panel rather than a larger screen but over on the right side. In my previous Mooney, I had the engine monitor on the right side and didn't like it there at all. So it was worth it to me to get the 900, in landscape mode, left side of the panel. My 252 comes with an intercooler, but I don't have the IAT probe. I'm not sure what it would do for me, so I didn't get it. I will say that the portrait/landscape issue is the most minor of all issues. I think you'd be happy with either.

This is comparing a 2 door coupe, like my 335i to a suburban. The missions are so different it seems that one should figure out what the mission is. Then the choice will be obvious.

I'm on a flight to Taiwan this evening. Probably not the correct "China" but if I could find it there, I'd bring a few of them back :-)

M20K231 Overhaul recommendation
gsxrpilot replied to Seattlekiddoc's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I'll be right at TBO. The engine is running fine, it's just leaking a more oil than I'd like. I'd also like to complete the Encore conversion. All that and being right at TBO is pushing me to go ahead and pull the engine for the overhaul and take care of everything else at the same time. -
Let me know if you find them. I've been looking as well. I think it's just a single sensor that will do both. But I haven't been able to find one. I'd like to add it to my set up.

FWIW I bought this one recently... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JQRC93V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've got an ATT SIM card in it and the app seems to work fine on my iPhone running iOS 13.

Estimated value of '68 M20F
gsxrpilot replied to cirrostratus's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
A couple of notes on this thread... There are no bargains in aviation. If you're retired with time on your hands, and hold an A&P with Inspection Authorization, this might be a good project. But it won't be a cheap project. If you own the airplane, then TBO is meaningless and there might be a lot of life left in the engine. But if you're negotiating to purchase the plane, the engine is run out and the cost of an overhaul must be factored into the calculations. A good turn-key, airworthy, ready to fly M20F, is worth between $70K and $100K. So I start there and work backward to see what the plane will require to get to that condition. As others have said, this one would likely require $70K to $100K worth of work, including labor, to get to that point. That should tell you how much it's worth the way it sits. The best advice I got before my first airplane, was not to buy a project. In the experimental world they talk about how there are Builders and there are Pilots. If you're a Builder, buy a kit and get started. If you're a Pilot, get a plane that is airworthy and ready to fly. If you can't afford an airworthy example of the M20F, refer to #1 above. -
M20K231 Overhaul recommendation
gsxrpilot replied to Seattlekiddoc's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I will likely overhaul the TSIO360 in my M20K sometime in 2020. I plan to use http://www.jewellaviation.com/default.htm -
Yes. Mooney has been out of business many times before... we're still flying them. There are other companies that make Mooney parts, i.e. LASAR. Having Mooney in business doesn't guarantee access to parts from Mooney. There are many parts they haven't produced in years. The salvage market is alive and well... meet @Alan Fox Many parts for our Mooneys are available off the shelf from places such as Aircraft Spruce. Owner produced parts are a real thing and an approved option. Mooney might not actually be out of business. This might be just a temporary pause. I'm not worried...
