  1. Again it was just a random event I thought was reasonably interesting. Good catch on the fuel cap.....it was leaking a bit, I will make sure it is properly installed next time. Makes sense as I have had no issues with leakage in the past. Fly safe everybody.
  2. I was coming out of Chicago the other day and temps were in the high single digits in Celcius and after I got through all of the visible moisture I looked out at my right wing and saw this white looking stuff building up behind the apparently now leaking fuel tank cap. Confounded me for a while as I was 100% sure it wasn't there when I left and then I looked back and it was gone. Best I can figure is the moisture coming off the gas cap combined with the evaporation of the fuel dropped the temperature locally enough to freeze what water was there. I just thought it was interesting. Now the fuel tank leaking is a new phenomenon, the line guys did really fill it up and I was able to push the cap down just a tiny smidge after I landed. That was on me, as I did visually check the quantity. I looked the gasket over and nothing looked odd, will just continue to monitor and see if this occurs again. Any advice appreciated. I did lose a couple of gallons I think.
  3. Yes, I just walked the floor today. Primarily was here for another meeting. It just isn't our market yet.
  4. I just flew into Gary yesterday, uber was $62. I just issued the train which is only $7 or so. I looked into MDW but the fees seemed too high. 100LL is $4.70 or so. The main runway is closed. Are you here for the NRA show?
  5. I think on the TCM web site they have a document which shows a contraption built on top to funnel air across cylinders for extended ground operations.
  6. But if we outlaw props only criminals will have props.....
  7. My understanding is you are supposed to clay bar before polishing and waxing. It is supposed to remove the embedded particles before you go and polish and grind them into the paint.
  8. There is supposed to be a rubber boot that directs the fluid out from the hub to cover the blades. I would assume this is known FIKI and non fiki airplanes.
  9. Care to elaborate on this? How do the tubes get bent? I know the nose steering rods can be bent, but this is first I have heard of actuator tubes being bent? Just educating myself. Thanks.
  10. I read another forum posting that mentioned looked fake, the landing gear is supported by the wings and seems to move awfully easy with very little effort. Like the airplane fuselage is supported somehow.
  11. I am going to speculate, because this is the internet, that wing was removed in the past and/or damaged by a hard landing necessitating some other type of repair that was done improperly.
  12. Does anybody know the part number for these? Story is the old dipstick was loose or not real tight in housing, mechanic put a new one it, now dipstick damn hard to get on and off......Actually started to tear the rubber so I decided to replace it. The old gasket was left in place and upon prying it off, practically dry rotted broke in half in my hands. The original was about twice the thickness of the replacement which leads me to believe the replacement is too thin....But if I were to just put the replacement in back to being too loose again is my guess...... Any thoughts?
  13. I had the system primed, system was running on "Normal" and seemed to be flowing properly before entering icing conditions at least 5 minutes before entering icing conditions in addition to the priming I did why taxing on ground. I wasn't using it to shed ice that had built up, have experimented with that in the past, just for fun in easy to escape icing conditions, doesn't really work. Maybe a gallon of the fluid was a year old, just put in 5 gallons of fresh brand new stuff a couple of weeks before. Again just the leading edge was built up barely. The airplane is filthy, it gets used a lot, maybe there were bugs that allowed ice to accumulate build up. Just speculating. I will contact the CAV guys and let everybody know what they say.
  14. Got to really use my TKS this morning, just light if anything but I noticed that there is ice buildup on what I would call the point of the leading edge. The fluid flows back and covers everything adequately just allows this accumulation to build up. Again this isn't some extreme SLD example and I really wasn't worried, just curious what it is supposed or not supposed to look like. Sorry about the picture quality, it was the best I could do. Again looking for a "normal baseline" what is it supposed to do? Thanks,
  15. Is there a certification issue why the G5 isn't legal or is is a sales and marketing ruse to drive us rich FIKI owners into something higher dollar $$? Said with some sarcasm and cynicism.....
  16. Put me down as a definite maybe.....from fort smith AR....
  17. Ha!!! I used to have a turn coordinator that sounded like a garbage disposal....just replaced it, now i am not even sure it is working it is so quiet.
  18. Just to continue the education a little bit. An overhaul is a legal definition that a repair shop has to go through to technically overhaul something. All of the details are beyond me but I know that propellers are a big one, involving grinding blades, mandatory part replacement, etc. again the legal side. In the U.S. as private fliers we don't have to overhaul much of anything so we can save some money on the process of repairing something. In other words if you send something in for overhaul it will cost a lot more than just a repair.
  19. I am no expert....I was charged $1.8k for an exchanged pitch trim servo from Honeywell, with everything being brought to latest mods. They replaced the motor and other bits and pieces so someone is getting the motors repaired or new. I couldn't tell you which. here is the company that advertises they repair Pittman motors........no idea on legality of using them or their actual capabilities... http://www.bigwoodselectric.com/
  20. My experience was after an unhappy to be litigated experience with Autopilot Central is that the most economical solution for the motor going bad was only about $1800 for an overhauled up to date mods etc. unit directly from BK.. While I was doing my research on this I did find somebody who overhauled the pittman motors....I think(hope) I saved the link on my ipad. I will check this evening. My avionics guy said by the time he would have gone through, tested, repaired, etc everything the overhauled unit was the most economical. The important thing is he found the problem right away without any shotgunning parts like a certain well regarded repair shop.
  21. Any reasoning on that? Or just not his market? I would be curious if the other airframe guys, P, B and C have more or less hours on average than our superior Mooney airframes model year being the same.
  22. I think that is the point someone made or attempted to make. We know aviation technology is behind automotive for many reasons and that cluld be applied to airplanes. Yes, jets and hydraulic fluid from skydrol are demanding, but do those challwnges exist in our mooneys? Perhaps that is the reason paint jobs cost $15k....i had my cessna repainted 20 years ago for $5k, yes slightly smaller but a hige increase beyond inflation.
  23. That is the problem with insurance, socializes the losses over everybody. Would we be better off taking on more financial responsibility? I would be willing to sign up for coverage that made me more responsible for my FU's, but right now I pay for everybody else. Look what happens when we decided insurance was necessary for health care, costs are spiraling upward at a rate 10 times inflation, give or take. I have high deductibles on my cars, willing to take the risk. Same thing there, I got rear ended, minor scratch marks on the bumper but the other insurance company paid me $1400 as they said bumper needed to be replaced. I am happy taking that money and squandering it on aviation. If I would have hit something and my car was damaged this way, I would just eat the loss of value, such as it is on an 8 year old crossover-SUV. What is your risk level?
  24. Yes, but a car engine on the highway is maybe 35%? Or about half of what an airplane does for hours on end.
