  1. That example shows that a 337 and a field approval are needed for items with STCs for other aircraft. That is significantly different than "just a log entry."
  2. Just because someone signed these off doesn't necessarily mean the FAA would agree that they are a legal installation. If only a logbook entry is needed then why did Whelen go to the time and expense of getting an STC?

  10. That vapor cloud is outside the tank. An uncontained vapor cloud will ignite if it finds a heat/spark source. I was only addressing the claim that fuel tanks would explode.
  11. Even a partially full tank is unlikely to explode because there is unlikely to be sufficient oxygen to form a highly combustible mixture inside a tank. Cars crash all the time and their fuel tanks do not explode. Just consider how hard we have to work to get fuel to burn in our cylinders and that fuel is almost entirely vaporized.
  12. Contrary to what Hollywood likes to show us, liquid gasoline in tanks is not likely to explode.
  13. They came from the factory with fixed gear but almost all have been converted to retractable. That day I was wishing I still had fixed gear.
  14. Trying to save your prop and engine during a gear-up landing is a fool's errand. You'd better believe the FAA will have something to say about your decision making if you shut off your engine and then fail to make the runway. On the other hand, the emergency procedure for a gear up landing in the POH for my M20J includes: "When sure of making landing area: Fuel selector.....off" That is presumably more about preventing a post-landing fire. When I had to make a gear-up landing in my M20D I shut off the fuel when I crossed the runway threshold.
  15. With both oil and fuel pressure reading low you might have a grounding issue. These gauges measure resistance in the sensors but they are sensitive to resistance in the entire system. You might want to check the main airframe ground back at the battery. Even a small amount of oxidation where it attaches to the airframe can cause low readings in those two gauges and high readings on the oil temp and CHT gauges.
  16. According to the TCDS the speed changed from 100 to 125 starting with S/N 690001 for the M20E which was the 1969 model year and S/N 680001 for the M20C which was the 1968 model year.
  17. I look forward to seeing pictures of the titanium switch covers. You shouldn't have any more problems with breakage. Personally, I think I'll stick with non-conductive materials.

  23. I don't see how they could've had a prop strike. It doesn't even have a prop.
  24. The backfiring suggests that fuel is getting to the cold cylinder but not igniting.
  25. Were you bidding on the 201 over in Newark (KVTA)?
