Drones spotted inside NY Bravo by several airplanes on approach!
Yetti replied to PTK's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Since 9/11 the armed forces have a yearly how to deal with drones. The clip I saw was a helicopter with a door gunner shooting at a quadcopter. As if that would work over a populated area.... spraying the ground with a bunch of 30 cal would be a media mess. Now on the other hand they had an E-2. Which would be fine to fire up the ECM, but everyone on the ground is going to be mad about losing their cell phone coverage. I told the FSDO guy that they should do some real world tests and see what will happen. I think a strike on a mooney wing would just bounce off with some dents and scraped paint. -

um not so sure about that http://www.ted.com/talks/vijay_kumar_robots_that_fly_and_cooperate?language=en -
Those look like Enmar paint codes. I just tried to get a Enmar paint code matched at the PPG auto finish store. Because they did not have a airplane listing book there was no cross reference. And google Fu does not show for Enmar. They suggested doing a paint match. So pull the battery cover or a cowl side and take it in.

Annual Inspection & General Service Maintenance
Yetti replied to losthorse's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
You also might try Ron at Brenham. He has a pretty good stream of Mooneys and Beech going through his shop for Annuals. Ron Stegemoller 3103 Aviation Way, Brenham, TX 77833 (979) 836-0846 -
Maybe I would make one maybe not depending on how critical the part is. Landing gear is pretty critical. And I would guess the spacer is chromoly and I have mild steel and alum. But I could provide the parts manual and drawings for later mooneys. I would go with spacer 26 is missing. I think there is a really big spacer on the backside of the nose wheel could also be missing.

Going for my checkride next week, what should I know for the oral part?
Yetti replied to Rik's topic in General Mooney Talk
This is what I prepped with. http://dovesnestfarm.com/wordpress/questions-for-the-oral-flight-exam/ I also had my Dad's manual slide rule E6B. The DPE was an engineer on a bomber in WWII so we played with the E6B for awhile. ie not having to answer questions during this time I would highly recommend breaking up the oral for an evening and the practical the next day. That way you have time to recover mentally from any drubbing. My flying goes down hill after I start mentally messing up. For a normal PPL you are better than you will every be at flying the plane. -
Things I learned today. Planes can talk plane to plane. I thought it was all rebroadcast from the ground. 1090 only may be missing some planes on 978. 1090 was kind of defined for big planes and 978 for small planes. The Stratus 2 receives both bands. Can't tell if the ground combines all and rebroadcasts both freq. TIS stands for traffic. FIS is for flight information service stuff weather and airport information. There is even protocol for charts. There is a 978 dump that could be used with another USB receiver to get the other planes transmitting on the same Raspberry PI box. Since I am more Android, it is possible that there is no need for the Raspberry PI could just plug the USB dongles into the USB ports on the tablet.

Besides not making it for twenty minutes in direct flame. If you go and tug on most of the plastic cable ties under the cowl you will find that they just break off due to fatigue of the heat on the plastic. There are stainless steel cable ties http://www.harborfreight.com/household/cable-ties/12-in-stainless-steel-cable-ties-25-pk-60330.html%C2'> The stainless crimp banding tool would be the right tool for the job.

Oh and my use of the word ty wrap is improper trademark infringement. Plastic cable tie is a better choice of words. A plastic cable tie that is a true Ty Wrap will have a metal piece for the locking mechanism.

I believe the point beyond that ty wraps are not "certified" is that the ty wrap will melt in a fire, then the fire sleeve will fall off and not do what is supposed to do. Hence you see the metal band holding on the fire sleeve in the picture.

Control swivels or Ball joint linkage

and $18.00 shipping. If I add in the depreciation cost of the lathe and tool bits, I am actually making money -
Drones spotted inside NY Bravo by several airplanes on approach!
Yetti replied to PTK's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Build a ground station. Point it at the drone. Get an FPV receiver. Record the telemetry and the video feed. Usually faces and houses will show up landing or taking off. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__543__172__FPV_Aerial_Video_Telemetry-FPV_Accessories.html Realizing off course that flying an RC model is about as illegal as throwing a football in class B. Throwing a frisbee in a TFR or flying a UAV could be considered illegal based on the wording. Flying a kite with a camera attached is also legal per the FARs ant TFR language. The FAA is as behind the times here as they are allowing safer equipment in a certified plane. But then again the Border Patrol still chases illegal aliens and drug runners with horse and ATVs.... -

Depending on the complexity they can be tracked. If they are flying POV, there is a downlink with telemetry data. You could query the avionics for the take off point if you wanted to. -

It's not illegal in the FAA sense of the FAR. There is an AC that suggests what RC controlled flying vehicles should do. The FAA failed to do the rule making process properly -

There was a stack of them for sale at Sam's Club yesterday. $99.00 and more avionics that a certified mooney. -
Do you have any ty wraps on your plane? Probably not legal. You need to go back to the cotton cable lacing to be in compliance.

Any polished Mooneys out there?
Yetti replied to Wildhorsesracing's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have one or two spots on the leading edges that look like that. Someone prior painted over them with another color white paint. Then that paint came off kind of. I am afraid that one day, I will just start polishing the spots and then suddenly the whole leading edge will become bright shiny and pretty. The interesting thing about the Mooney paint jobs is that they were very thin. The current repaint jobs seem like a very thick coating. I would not be surprised if new paint jobs do not add a great deal of weight to the plane. -
Control swivels or Ball joint linkage
Yetti replied to Yetti's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
In things that bother me. The Starboard ball linkage joint is still missing the retaining sleeve to hold the ball in. This is on the control rod that holds the cowl flap. It was safety wire tied back together. I could order the McMaster Carr replacement, but the linkage is coarse thread and the one on the plane if fine thread. Then I would have part of the wrong part laying around and I only need the retaining sleeve and spring. Some of you know how a lathe works some may not. So here we go. And I get a chance to use the older than me 9" South Bend Lathe. First step is to face and center drill. The center drill has no play in it so it is more accurate. Next we step up the drill size not to final size of 31/64 But a random size. The will let for a better final drill sizing with less wobble. Final ID Internal Dimension drilling operation. Dimensioning the OD or Outside Diameter This lathe operation use the half nut on the feed screw. Use a hacksaw to cut off the sleeve and file a bit to clean up the edges. I think it has taken me longer to do this post than it was to make the piece. I already created a spring out of safety wire. The lathe and the plane are in two different cities so the final pics should be up later in the week. -
With a bucket you would have to mount the heat exchanger vertical, which would then get into your ice carrying capacity. Also would need to do duct work and only use the heat exchanger vs airflow across the top of the ice. Would still work.

Icebox worth it ? and also it's installation to ship batteries.
Yetti replied to Houman's topic in General Mooney Talk
-a- These are a buck or so at wally world. So no Ice needed. 5 of them lasted about 20 minutes in 100 plus heat. -

I just noticed in the top picture is the old UPS that I charge my battery pack with. I could get fancy with plugs, but I just use alligator jump wires -

Recently built on for about $75 in parts. Got to use it last evening. It was in the 100s in Texas. Small refrigerator in the hanger with ice packs in the freezer section. For a battery you can get a couple Sealed Lead Acid 7 amp hour at home depot by the security lights section. Charge them with a 12volt DC wall wart. 12volt cigerett lighter with wires from autoparts house will have the spade lugs that connect to the top of the battery. Should run it till you get up to altitude. Went for a dinner flight and was able to keep my shirt dry. Very much worth it. -
Ordered mine. Skipped the velcro... I mean doesn't everyone have several rolls laying around? most power bricks are USB Ie 5 volt. So just plug it in and power it up
