  1. I do a lot of process work to pay for my flying. I think the FAA ADM process is flawed because they are looking at it from an accident investigation after the fact has occurred. They teach the accident chain all the way through to auguring in. Perceive Perform Process will keep you going until you are a NTSB report. There should be a Stop in the process. And there should be a process to learn how to stop. I have probably read more than a 1000 NTSB reports during training. Most all of them could have been prevented if the pilot had stopped. That may include putting it on the ground and evaluating why you are in the air. From day one in our training we learn that time is money and the Hobbs tells us that. I think there were more than a few times where I told the CFII that we are just going to sit here for a few minutes. A form of get there itus is taught to us in training. For me some of the signs to stop are: The weather "should" start looking more like I planned for it to be Any time you say "We should be able to make _______" If _____ and ______ happen then we will make it Also being able to dynamically set minimums and then adhere to them. We need 2000 feet for that area. Weather stations are reporting 1600. We need to set it down and reevaluate all the options prior to continuing. There are 1000s of decisions you are making while flying a plane being able to stop the overload is also important. Some of this is taught as we learn the skill of flying and comes out as that "pilot stuff" When a gust blows you off center line and now you are looking at grass 10 feet above the ground, you just need pilot stuff to cram and level and fly the plane. The one accident report that I read about a Mooney CFIT in Colorado keeps an image in my mind. I went to google earth and found you could still see the outline of the plane just below the ridge top. I am sure the guy was thinking "I should have just enough to clear it" The other two are the family that was killed around Bryan Texas as they were trying to cross a front line and the charter pilot with the Cessna 400 that tried to fly through the front and spun it in around East Texas. What was crazy about that is he could have flown around the tail of the front and probably only added 45 minutes to his flight.

Regular car chargers are pretty good at killing SLA batteries. What I have found is the little wall warts at 12volt DC are pretty good at maintaining motorcycle batteries and SLA batteries. Some people put them on a household timer. If you think about what is coming out of your alternator or generator and replicate that.

  6. Voltage regulator failed and took out the alternator or wire broke and took out the alternator. Start at the battery. All terminals need to be shiny bright clean. Could be as easy as one of the battery connections is loose. Check the master solenoid connections. Emery cloth and wire brushes are your friend here.

  12. The proper sized nail is also a good probe. Also alligator clip the VOM ground to a good ground. Then you just have to work with the positive lead of the VOM A set of these will keep you from arcing stuff

  14. I think he was asking about 4 point belts, not 3 points belts. I too was wondering the same. My friends Baron has 4 point belts that have a retract reel in the top of the cabin. In a Mooney attaching to the tube above the head would seem to be the same as attaching a 3 point to the side tube.
  15. I went through this without an attorney. If you put a picture you took on the internet you own the copyright. Does not need a C or statement at the end of the page. I had a guy take a picture off a page then write an article. I pointed him to the part of the Federal Code after he responded with it is fair game. He then took the picture down. From a Mooney stand point, since the FARs require you to fly with the Operators Manual as part of the Aircraft Specification 2A3, then does the FAR over ride the copyright law? It would seem that the manual is part of the plane you own, just like the fuel pump. Lawyers are going to Lawyer.

  17. Corpus is one of the centers of getting oilfield stuff rebuilt. Best option. Pull the pump SWA the family home and get a rebuild. come down and reinstall the pump and fly it home. Or order one next day and replace it. Fly it home. Sometimes when pumps fail stuff goes downstream. Back flushing the system is a good idea.

  22. Pennywise or pound foolish would depend on if they were commercial jacks through the wings. Which it appears they are. Fixing the interface point is how to prevent a jack through the wing.
  23. Since I need to change tires soon, I was thinking about this, I would like to have some sort of positive mechanical locking between the jack and the plane. This morning I started with a piece of steel with a hole big enough to fit over the head of the jack. You could cross drill the hole to run a pin though the hole on the top of the jack. Tap and run a cap bolt through to screw into the plane. Cut a piece of rubber mat to protect the finish. But I realized that there should be some swivel between the plane and the jack. So currently looking at Impact swivel socket cross drilled to pin a bolt for the plane and then drilled out for the top of the jack that can still be cross drilled to pin the swivel socket to the jack.

  25. The real question is Who installed this one such that it was allowed to vibrate loose and are the other ones loose? Now your mechanics time is up to an hour to remove and thread lock all the other ones.
