  1. generically in the discussions damage has a whole different meaning on something new than something 40 years old. values are calculated differently that should have been a discussion parameter. Why because the object was closer to new and new value has real meaning vs 40 year old value where it is what a person would pay on a given day. If we are talking about something close to new I retract my previous comments, they were based on something 40 years old.
  2. But they are brown and boring and don't look as cool as finely routed stainless outer braid. My Dad was engineering in a ship yard. a boats engine room full of stainless braid with everything routed and ship shape was a thing of beauty
  3. I have a 6000 MS that waiting for me to finish up the leather seat project. One thought is the 44 pin Molex connectors that the 6000 uses are not available from common online sources any longer. I would think that avionics shops still have them. That is not to say that a standard 44 pin correct pitch edged connector won't work just fine. They were about $15 dollars from digikey
  4. I think you just described several scenes in Office Space On the other hand there is the never talk to the cops theory of there are an uncountable (efforts have failed that tried to count them all) number of federal laws. More than likely we all violate one per day.
  5. Same issue with can bus and swapping to LED. Say LED flashers on a motorcycle. You will still get a indicator out after installing the LED. Most people will add a resistor to the circuit. For some reason 330 ohms rings a bell. Ohm out one light and that would be close.
  6. So the plane is basically hand built at the factory. If the hands that repair the damage do as good or better a job as the hands at the factory... Is it damaged? I think of damage as wind moving over a surface. Would the "damage" interrupt that wind flow in a negative way? How negative of way?
  7. The brown silicone hoses are the real deal. The only step up is a stainless outer braid with teflon core. Well shoot fire that was fun spending other people's mechanic dollars and group solving on the fix. :-) You should be good for many happy flight hours for awhile. I like a fast taxi or two and then some loitering over the top of the airport.
  8. As Jet driven said. AD fuel lines. If the rubber in the adel clamps is dried up and hard. Most likely is. They need to be replaced. While you are in there..... Things that are good to know. 6. The fuel servo is not related to this issue but i asked about his thoughts since it was 1985 since being replaced. The way to test it is to run the engine up and get it warm, do mag checks, then to idle down to 900 or so RPM, turn on the boost pump. If the pressure from the boost pump pressure changes the mixture then the servo needs to be looked at.
  9. I have 4 mason jars at the hanger for testing. I would want a better definition of "shot" I would want to know what was the material that was plugging and where did it come from. Have there been any mechanical fuel pump failures recently? Has the Fuel servo Screen been checked and cleaned? What about the fuel flow measuring device? Who installed and did they let crud get in?
  10. Good workmanship is not trivial. Sadly good workmanship is hard to find.
  11. Which is why I still can't understand and there could be a great case made. My $1000.00 of flying electronics 100s of times more navigational/self flight capabilities with 6 propellers is a FAA authorized aircraft able to operate in the NAS with old technology certified planes that can't use LED technology and will fall out of the sky if you let go of the yoke.
  12. LED position lights
  13. go to the back of the plane. with a hand gently pick up on the center cone type area. Feel how much the tail moves. Should give just a bit.
  14. Well journey along in the same CB spirit as how to save $5 by building your own control ball link. as I show you how to turn them into rich Corinthian Leather more fitting of your 40 year old pride and joy. In this example we are going to reuse the foam as Mooney did a great job of gluing things together. The first step it to take your seam cutter and take all the stitches out. This will leave you with this Now you have some really nice patterns. So measure and cut out some new leather. Here the seams have been run up the leather and the top and side parts cut out. The rear of the front seats has a cut out for the ash trays. The commercial way for new leather is to glue the new leather in. That would work but is messy and takes some skill. So instead we just pop rivet in a patch. Drill some holes and now you can use the plastic holder thingys. The ash tray is just laying there for illustrative purpose only. More to follow after some sewing.
  15. Then you realize the Grimes bulbs that are currently in there are not PMA, TSO, or STC either. The best they have going for them is defacto standard. If there were not regs and such. My plane would look like a christmas tree. There would be steerable landing lights on the nose gear and wig wags all over the place. Other pilots would want to fly near me just to enjoy the show.
  16. I just pulled apart one of my front seats. Need to measure and start sewing. I think I am going to stick with the 3 panel theme from the back. I am consistently amazed at the simplicity and engineering that Mooney put into these seats and that they came out very light in weight.
  17. P Lead to ground = grounding out the magneto which means no start. So the P lead at the switch was contacting something and completing the circuit to ground. One of the mags is grounded out when moved to start and the SOS takes over. The other one is advanced.
  18. maybe an 1/8 inch. Two mechanics have said that is normal
  19. I think I would have just put "replaced starboard nav light, verified operation, continue in service"
  20. Can anyone find the TSO or PMA for the Grimes A1285-G-12? I think that will be the answer to if LED bulbs are legal.
  21. so just so people know it is kind of cheating to take pictures of LED performance with a digital camera. The CCD in the digital cameras are very sensitive to LED as they are on the same light wave temperature path. Do those have some strobe in them or just red and green?
  22. we were able to put a piece of foam weatherstrip under the edge of the existing. If I was thinking about inflatable, some black latex tubing and a pump out of a blood pressure monitor may make a fine door seal
  23. generally a couple of headlight bulbs to match the proper draw amperage is the old school load.
  24. As with all new skill sets there are things that you learn as you go along. I would do several things different if I had to do it again, but it has turned out OK. On to the front seats
  25. I think I would go like this. If pull through shows all good. Then checking timing. If timing is on. Then fuel. It almost sounds like the shear pin on the accessory drive gear has failed partially. Fuel inspection could be limited to Servo, Servo Screen, Fuel divider, injectors.
