  1. Infrastructure....Something was sure messing with SoCal today. Multiple Aircraft were getting TCAS alerts and SoCal didn't see the targets on there screens. They gave me 3 transponder codes between VNY and MHV. Each time they asked me to ident. Luckily it was unrestricted visibility! I checked in and they were strangly pissed off sounding on the radio. The controller later apologized and mentioned something about a new system. -Matt
  2. I would go over there with your tech, help him if he needs help with the jacks and such. It sounds like he's a responsible guy since he wants to drag his jacks up there. I'd also keep the owner out of the guys hair, go grab a coffee with the owner and let the guy work, and don't be to buddy buddy with the owner. From experience, having an owner and future owner looking over my shoulder, while both are emotionally evolved, is not the best working environment to preform the inspection. I don't mind it, but it really slows things down if the owner is chatty. Have fun, but be 100% prepared to tell the owner "have a nice day" and walk. -Matt
  3. It was neat reading up on the 4th FS. The "Bad Angle" popped up in several searches. Nice work Carl. -Matt
  4. I have your fix!!! It's a New Acclaim with that ever so cool A/C switch!!
  5. If I was the guy who goofed up working on it, I would be scraping sealant as we speak to keep the owner happy. I'm suprised the guy is even arguing with you. -Matt
  6. D, I'll be at SMO the rest of the week except MHV on Wed. Feel free to stop by either place and I'll make sure it's topped off. -Matt
  7. I don't know... I think the guy maybe have been pulling strings to get to land. Or He may have been into his reserve fuel by the time he landed at his alt airport. I thought The tone of the tape indicated some professionalism. Other than dispatch possibly blowing it, I think the crew did the right thing. No one was hurt, injured, and the people got where they needed to be. Who knows how much fuel they really had. I wish them the best, but they are up a slight incline. Maybe they were ex Airforce guys. lol. -Matt
  8. Good for you D!! That's awesome! Good stops though Kansas if needed include Hutchison and Liberal. I'd reccomend doing through ELP due to the terrain and Elevation. Ping the board if you get stuck anywhere, vast knowledge all over the country!! Bring cash, recently had to pay cash in Missouri to a local sheriff for fuel in a Husky. He said he was not able to take a credit card... Lucky my buddy and I managed to get 150 bucks to get us home. Have a blast! If you want to borrow my O2 bottle let me know. It well help on the long days above 8k. I'm about to pull my M20 down for annual so I don't need it. -Matt
  9. I'd look for corrosion under the rear seat spar, spar caps near the retract springs, seams of all skin joint and the condition of the steel tubes. If there is no corrosion, all the other gripes are superficial. I didn't see anything that was scary at all in the pictures alone. -Matt
  10. Well done Dave!! The sad part is there could be some truth to some of it! -Matt
  11. Hi Cliff, The owner just wants a switch to be replaced on an unobtanium part? So am I missing something on why the 72xx breaker switch can't be installed. Yes we all know the rectangled labeled rocker switches are a pain in the ass, but it's just a switch for a landing light. And on the FAA weenies...I agree. I realize I make a living with my IA too. Granted if I was signing the annual, I would tell the owner at annual to change non conforming parts but good grief. Let's all relax!!!!! I wonder how many violations were issued as OSH this year. (Probably none) Every other certified airplane I looked at had either the paddle LED lamps or the cylinder LED lamps. I agree that the red LeD lamps are not as bright at the original lamps. However they do draw about 5a less than the original. I know what the right thing to do is , but if an owner wants to install whatever he wants on his own airplane... Who really cares! Just some late night frustration on why the Feds are so silly. If it's not a safety of flight issue, it shouldn't matter. -Matt
  12. I think tempest makes one as well. Some of the manufactures have gotten out of the business after too many lawsuits. -Matt
  13. ILS into DPA, then cancel once VFR continue straight ahead to 06C. With the Class G in the Chicago airspace, it's kinda fun. The VFR mins are lower than the lFR mins. At least with the MVA around 06C used to be 2600' The FBO does have funny hours so call ahead. I have Jumped the fence several times... -Matt
  14. StreamLight stylus pro!!! They are usually on the snap on rig. $27 on Amazon. 2 AAA batts. High powered LED, I buy them as gifts. They are awesome in the shop. Usually always have one on hand. Push button switch. The stupid mag lights always need to twist on, then you pull a dead lamp out of your pocket as it rolled and turned itself on 5hr earlier. If anyone finds one in New Orleans... it's mine!!! -matt
  15. Where are you located? I'll take an IPC check with him in my E...That would account for some time. I had about 3 hrs in M20C's with a few buddies. Then another 40 or so in an M20M with a friend. At the time Falcon didn't require any E time for me. My partner with 3000k hrs, 2500 multi, and 2700 retract was actually required to obtain time in the E before he was covered. They can make up whatever times they feel comfortable with. We have been happy with Falcon. -Matt
  16. I saw them at OSH too... The entire time I was thinking "yea right" no way they can make this work for the angle valve... Sure enough. nope! Bummer! Another reason for you guys with your C's. Lol. -Matt
  17. The Extra 400 had the similar Continental. They were really trying hard to make the engine work, but the -400 didn't do too hot sales wise either. It would be neat to see reworked, because I bet you could get the cooling drag down to nothing. Maybe Continental should have consulted with Rotax a bit more. However, A "Liquid Cooled Rocket Ship" has a nice ring to it. -Matt
  18. The camp ground has 110v outlets. There is a Target and I think even a Best Buy in town. The Fly Market might have a DC 12v cigarette lighter or something like that. I think GO Pro may have their tractor trailer there. They might have one. I know a lot of camera guys use the power stations to charge their cameras. -Matt
  19. Skytec has always had amazing Customer Service. I had an old LS on my E that lasted more than 25 years and 1200hrs. I replaced it at overhaul with another LS. The old one was still working. I'd rather have the NL, but I didn't have a spare core at the time. They are a great family company!! -Matt
  20. Check inside the exhaust. Some times the muffler comes apart from the inside and makes a horrible racket. -Matt
  21. I find rotating the tube in the housing 180° helps spin the seal enough that it reseals. It just puts fresh seating area on the seal. -Matt
  22. Jet Aviation has always been great. I find my myself there once or twice per year. -Matt
  23. Some older IA's may only dial the crank and let it fly on a prop strike. To be honest all that is required is to inspect the crank gear, dowl pin, and to change the bolt with new locking tab. To comply with the factories inspection guidelines, I don't believe you need to even split the case. I wouldn't touch it if some one wanted me to sign it off with out splitting the case. Espically after 42 years. -Matt
  24. Maybe I shouldn't go to Oshkosh tomorrow either? Looks awesome!! -Matt
  25. Hang in there!! My airplane partner and I have named our 65E "Patients" -Matt
