Incorrect.  If the IA has noted discrepancies, you must have those discrepancies corrected, or obtain a ferry permit, before further flight.  A discrepancy means the aircraft is unairworthy, and it's a FAR violation to operate an unairworthy aircraft (and it'd be pretty hard for you to argue that it was inadvertent if your IA has specifically informed you of the squawk).

That may be so, but if this is the only thing the IA cited I'd still fly MY PLANE out of there signed off or not and never set foot in his hangar again.  If anything ever came of it I’d cite that fact that it has been in the plane for X years and X IAs have looked at it and have not made any negative comments about it as well as the other arguments cited above.

Heck he didn’t strap a 400SHP turbo prop on the front of the plane.

I think this is a major problem with GA today for private planes something as simple as an EGT and IA wants to hold an owner hostage.  These planes can fly with no electrical system and no engine gauges they are not necessary for flight. (well a battery to start the engine on the ground)  They are nice to have a better picture of what is going on but not necessary for the engine to run or for flight.

At the end of the day the PIC is the final authority that determines if the plane is airworthy, not the FAA, IA, FSDO or anyone else.  These are our planes we bought with our money and it is high time the gov’t backs off some on what we can put in them.  How many times have you gone to go fly and you notice something is not right and you scrub the mission for that day or you determine that you can make the flight safely?  You are in charge and responsible for your plane.

I know we have been over this before but it sure would be nice to know what IA's and A&P's to stay away from...

maybe 201er can do it with a poll :)

Alan, there's really no reason to reinstall a factory EGT gauge--your IA is dead wrong on this.  If he can't show you a FAR or a listing in the TCDS that requires one, but still refuses to sign off the aircraft as airworthy, direct him to sign off the annual with discrepancies.  The log entry will read like this: "I certify that this aircraft has been inspected in accordance with an annual inspection and a list of discrepancies and unairworthy items dated mm/dd/yy has been provided to the owner or operator."  Then get some other mechanic (who isn't suffering from an acute cranial-rectal inversion) to sign a log entry saying something like "EGT instrument not required on this aircraft."  Problem solved.  Oh, and don't go back to this IA for another annual.

I had an entry exactly like this one (but was another issue) in my logs for the Bonanza. Not a problem.

The IA is an IDIOT. He is dead wrong. He must sign off, with his percieved discrepency if needed, but he must sign off as stated above. No need to reinstall the old gauge. YOU can return to service with an entry " Returned to service, EGT not needed per TC"

Never go back to this BOZO again.  He is either incompetent or a crook either way it is time to move on.
