Today I replaced the yoke mount for the GPS 696 with a suction mount. I really like the new position and getting the GPS off the co-pilot yoke. I wonder what experience anyone has had with the RAM suction. My instinct is to release it between flights assuming that the suction might fail and drop the GPS on the floor.

Why would you need the 696 when you already have the GTN-750? José
Because Bob came from the same school I did. You always need to have redundancy of a redundancy of a redundancy of an original ;) I have an GTN 650 with an Aspen PFD/MFD with a Nexus 7 running Garmin Pilot with an iPad running Garmin Pilot with a 295 in the flight bag just in case :) oops forgot that I also have an iPhone running ForeFlight. Bob - I use a RAM mount on my Nexus 7. It has pretty remarkable holding power and I have left mine on the plexiglass without the Nexus in it for a week without any issues. I have similar designed suction devices on my tile walls in my shower holding wet wash cloths and they have been there for over 6 months. That said, my wash cloths and empty Nexus cradle are a lot cheaper than your 696. I would take it down or if you can, remove the unit. I often wonder what effect altitude changes have on them. There is enough slake in the wiring to the 696 that comes out under the panel to allow be to release the suction and lay the whole assembly on the floor. I still have the hard cover for the 696 so that's a pretty safe stow. Or I could use a heavy S hook to hand it from the yoke between flights. If I continue to like the position, RAM also makes a plate mount that bolts to the panel instead of suction. www.sportys.com/PilotShop/product/14255

Sorry about the washed out pic, the bright windshield was a problem for my phone camera.

I had the 696 when mu only panel mount GPS was a 1st generation 155. But even with the 750 is is handy to have the interconnected 696 to pull up approach plates, freqs, weather, etc. And then there's the BU role.

RAM makes a glareshield mount that I've been using for years with my 496.  It is a plastic U-channel with a pair of screws to clamp the glareshield, and it provides the traditional RAM ball.  I'm not sure if it would work on a pre-J glareshield, but it is another option.  The 696/796 might be too heavy, though.
