rbridges Posted November 24, 2012 Report Posted November 24, 2012 Finishing up install of the GPSS today. The "low battery" error has been flashing on the 430. I assumed a bad battery or solder job. The guy doing the install called and said that one of the circuit boards is messed up. There is also a connector wire in the unit that is chafing against the housing. On top of that, the cooling fan is running rough and intermittent. Bottom line, I should have it sent to Garmin and checked. It's non-waas, so I'll have to upgrade. I was planning on doing it some time next year. I guess I'll have to cash in next year's Christmas gift a little early. He said I should be able to run it for a little while as is. I'll just have to keep entering frequencies every time I start up the plane. That is surprisingly annoying. I'm really close to getting my instrument checkride, so I'm trying to get that done before sending the 430 back.
1964-M20E Posted November 24, 2012 Report Posted November 24, 2012 Sorry to hear that or maybe it is good to hear depends on your poit of view. I'm not sure what Garmin will charge you but look aorund you may find another 430 out there.

I sent mine to Garmin and they have an $800 flat rate ( I think it was $800) and you get back an updated unit. My Garmin dealer didn't recommend the Waas upgrade as there is an ILS at just about every airport I fly to regularly.
jetdriven Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 FWIW you need a WAAS GPS to input an ADS-B transponder in the future.
OR75 Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 waas gps is needed for ads-b but simple , standalone ads-b units (that include internal waas receiver) are and will be available in the future.
