Hi gang,

New to the forums, and though I saw some somewhat relevant threads, but I figure I should ask for some wisdom here.

I'm 6' 7" and 250 lbs. Simple question... Could I squeeze into M20C/E/F? My height is mostly in torso.

How would you compare say an Archer or 172 to Mooney in terms of tall pilot comfort?

Thanks!

I am 6'4', long in torso, and I fit fine in a friend's "F". Mooney is easier to fit into than a 172. I cannot fit in a C210, but I fit fine in a Mooney.

You can monkey around a lot with the seat back angle, and the distance from the panel.

Get Halo earpieces - otherwise your headset will jam into the headliner.

Interesting, I used to fly boxes in 210's some years ago and had no issues fitting in.

Thanks for the info.

Depends on the 210. If you have the built-in oxygen, you lose some headroom to the distribution system right above the pilot/co-pilot.

Some seats are more adjustable than others too.

In my plane we set the height of our eyeballs with seat height and back angle. Using the proper headset is a really good idea.

I am 6'3" and I have all the room I need in my 63 E. Much more room then a Cherokee 180. Seat position is more like a Mustang than a Taurus.

I consider my "E" as a 3 adult plane. My seat is all the way back during exit and entry then I slide it up about 1/2-2/3 the way for good pedal position.

Before I bought mine I flew in a "C" and F and liked the postion.

I'm only 5-11, and I sit on a 2" wedge cushion for visibility over the nose during landing. There are three seat positions on my C, I fly in the middle one which fits nicely for rudder pedal control. My 5-3 wife sits on three regular chair cushions, and cannot reach the pedals.

Headset clearance was never an issue. Now, though, I use Halos for greatly improved pilot comfort--no more headaches, no more sweaty ears in the summer, etc. It will give another inch of headroom if you are close. Note that my seatback has three positions, and I think I'm in the most upright of them.

Everyone thinks they don't need a cushion to ride with me. Then they sit in the plane, look out front and change their mind. Every single person who has ever ridden with me uses at least one cushion, most people use two. Lots of headroom. My last BFR, the instructor sat on two cushions and pulled the seat all the way forward to reach the pedals.

If you're overseas in Europe, search for EMPOA, the European branch of MAPA. Shouldn't be too hard to find one to sit in and test the fit. Don't believe most of what you hear from Brand B/C/P pilots about "cramped Mooney cockpits," that kind of stuff is what I put in the garden.

To update my thread, yes... I fit and actually quite comfortably. With the seat all the way back, I can stretch my legs quite comfortably.

So I'm a proud new owner of a 1965 Mooney M20E. As people said, short body Mooneys are really very comfy 2-seat planes even for the tall folks (6'7") with lots of room for luggage or 2 small kids... and boy, does his thing wanna fly.......... :)

The plane will still have some work to be done at Don Maxwell's, but overall I'm very happy with my new toy.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Congrats on the new plane. I'm a fairly new owner myself and I'm loving my M20C. So glad I picked a Mooney!!!!

CONGRATS on the 65'E...

I just LOVE this airplane and the last pilot friend I took up commented on the rate of climb with 2 aboard and full fuel.

Good luck with it.

Thanks guys!

I love this plane. Fast little hot rod, climbs like a homesick angel and absolutely does not like to slow down...

I think this Christmas, 76W is gonna be spoiled the most... ;)

Gotta agree with you RJ. Best of the Mooney line, in my opinion. But I am probably biased. ^_^
