See I’m even confused as to how a P-51 can be Experimental, yes I know many are hugely modified and not through the STC process because there is no Type Certificate to modify for one. But by what means are they Experimental? You can’t just make your Mooney Experimental, you can if your in search of an STC or are the manufacturer but I don’t think you can just because you want to race it for example, yet obviously they can old Warbirds.

There are a number of different categories of Experimental.

One is Airshow/Exhibition.   AFAIK, most warbirds are in that category.

The two types of airworthiness certificates issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are standard airworthiness certificates and special airworthiness certificates:

  • Standard airworthiness certificate
This certificate allows an aircraft to be operated with minimal restrictions, and is issued for aircraft that meet the approved type design and are in safe operating condition. It's valid as long as the aircraft is registered in the US and meets the relevant maintenance and alteration requirements.

  • Special airworthiness certificate
This certificate is issued for aircraft that don't meet the requirements for a standard airworthiness certificate, such as agricultural aircraft, experimental aircraft, and some ex-military aircraft. There are several types of special airworthiness certificates, including primary, restricted, limited, light-sport, and experimental.

I think if memory serves that strange as it sounds but that I had an FAA flight physical though.

In the USAF, all Flight Surgeons where allowed to issue up to a Class II FAA Medical.

So I flew on a USAF Flying Class 2 physical in USAF aircraft, but they also, as a courtesy, gave me an FAA Class II each time also.
