Matthew P Posted May 2, 2024 Report Posted May 2, 2024 Anyone have one of these, Called 11 Mooney Service Centers and they don't have them, can't order them and Mooney isn't currently making them yet there is a reoccurring AD. Thanks, Matt Quote

Thanks, Matt Yeah I’ve been waiting for this one to crop up… Do you currently have a set of 20:1 that is worn out? If they are serviceable, you can keep using them. If not, you might look at salvage yards for a set of serviceable gears (either old or new). Even with the new ones (which makes moving the gear more gentle/slower), you still have the recurring AD for inspection and lube. Quote
Matthew P Posted May 2, 2024 Author Report Posted May 2, 2024 Mine are good (FOR NOW) just know that eventually they will need to be replaced and I don't want an AOG if I don't have to and don't want to pay $6K for a used gear motor where the gears may/may not be bad..I'm waiting to hear back from Mooney...the support staff (Frank) has been great, but it's the management that's not in touch with the issues. cliffy Posted May 2, 2024 Report Posted May 2, 2024 The only reason they had an AD on gear actuator was because no one took them apart, cleaned them out and refilled with the correct lube in 30 years or more. If that had been done you wouldn't have the AD. If they had been treated correctly I doubt many would have ever worn out. 1 Quote

I had my C for 24 years. I did the AD faithfully (under supervision). Over the years, I could not detect any increase in gear lash. While nothing lasts forever, keeping your gear lubed and properly rigged decreases the strain/wear on the gears to the point where you think they may last forever. Personally, I think avoiding extending/retracting the gear at max allowable airspeed is also a factor. I always tried to get the gear up ASAP after takeoff and I tried to extend the gear below 90 KTS. Be kind to your gear. 1 Quote
Ragsf15e Posted May 2, 2024 Report Posted May 2, 2024 My 20/1 gears failed the AD in 2015 at a major MSC. Luckily, they were available from laser at the time, so I have “new” 40 to 1 gears in there. I don’t know what the maintenance on them was like before that, because that was my first annual. However, they will eventually wear out. Especially the 20 to 1 gears. Quote
