Has anyone ever purchased the p/n 940143-501 landing gear rod boot. Wondering if It’s the same 61yr old material with glue/tape installation mine has? At 563.10 I’m thinking exuberant cost is allowing owner produced parts here. Photo of that part would be great if possible. Thanks all

Get some of these:

And some kevlar thread. Sew a zig zag seam down the side to narrow it to rod diameter. Sew some buttonhole stiches along the bottom and slit to make the ears to tape on.

Make your own out of a good, heavy-duty cotton canvas. Spray it with a fire-retardant spray, glue it in place. Make sure your cabin is labeled “No Smoking” and you’ve met the requirements of CAR3 and owner produced part.

Is that the same as "rat rags" or "rat socks"?

I’m planning on fabricating some at my next annual.  Haven’t come up with a final design though.

Same here, got some ideas above. Was hoping someone actually purchased the O.E. for an easy copy. My original is very thin what looks like vinyl over canvas however it doesn’t burn and is only 0.012” thick. Also doesn’t look vapor permeable.

I see yours are attached to the rod outboard and flange inboard. Is this how your old ones were? Not even sure if I have access inboard.

Also noticed your rod connecting bolt is installed opposite direction as mine… ulgh.. I have to remove the rocker and inner rod bolt to get the boot on. Maybe sew in place

The “rocker” (the parts manual calls it a walking beam) isn’t that hard to remove.  I put mine back together the way it came apart, but the parts manual actually shows the bolt should be reversed like yours is.  The boot itself is attached the way the original was.  I simply measured the remains of the old one and sewed a few until I got it right

Hector at AeroComfort made some for my airplane out of black leather. Mike Kneese at the Factory Service Center in Kerrville put them on and was very impressed with them..

Mooney in times past had been testing leather vs. the material used before and found the leather held up better

Yes, walking beam. With the bolt in the “correct“ direction, it becomes a pain. I may accidentally reinstall backwards .

My boot was taped to the inboard end of rod and glued to inboard side of exit hole.

Rivets! That would be nice, I have an oval hole littered with Huck bolt lumps.

 I like your leather ones

Is it understood that if the rod comes apart we are talking about being on jacks?

Yes on jacks, also have lift assist springs removed.
