An A&P tipped me off to Davies Klear to Land.  Works really well, takes off grease / soot / other residues also, and is designed to be used on windshields and leave a film. 

I start at one wingtip and walk around the plane, spraying it on all the leading edges and windshield.  By the time I'm back where I started, the bugs are softened up enough to come off with a quick wipe of a clean rag.

Maybe a little pricy but the big 19oz can seems to last a long time.
