Parker_Woodruff Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 A local A&P IA and myself are working on a potential STC for an LED and reflector assembly for the recognition lights on my 1990 M20J-AT. It would replace the bulb and reflector assembly that currently costs $135+ from Whelen. I had the idea after: 1) finding out how much these bulbs cost 2) getting a melted recog lens from the heat and wanting to operate these all the time. 3) wanting something brighter Considering that a bulb/reflector assembly costs ~$135+/side, would this modification interest you, and at what marginal cost? KSMooniac Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 Yes, I'm interested. In fact, I talked to a Whelen tech guy just yesterday b/c I'm trying to source a strobe flash tube for my OEM (and extinct) Hoskins strobes and the subject came up.... Whelen is working on a broad STC right now that would cover many models including Mooneys, so you might want to talk with them first before spending any effort! Quote

KSMooniac Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 Yes, I do. I have a strobe/recog light combo on my blunt wingtip, and the strobes are obsolete now, thus my desire to switch to something modern and the LED recog light + strobe combo unit is at the top of my wish list. It should fit in the same footprint that I have now. Quote
bmcmahan Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 Hey, i'm new to mooneyspace. I am having a starting issue with my m20f and would like to find someone who might have ideas of what to do. Starter cranks slow at first, then speeds up once it's going. Bill Quote

KSMooniac Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 oops! Parker...I've confused myself on this thread and just figured out you're talking about the forward-facing white lights and not nav/position lights! You are correct in that I have nav and strobe lights only, and I was confusing nav/position lights with recognition lights! Carry on with any STC attempts for LED upgrades...I'll post when I know more about their LED position/strobe combos. Quote

KSMooniac Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 Yeah, that is what I'll need. FYI, here is their current catalog for Mooney applications:http://www.whelen.com/_AVIATION/catalog/Mooney.pdf Quote
fantom Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 Parker....I've replaced one recognition light, and couldn't believe the price. Now I rarely use them for fear of burning through the protective lens. Count me as very interested, and good luck! Quote
Chris White ex-N205KD Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 I'm in at at anything less than what these coverted projector bulbs cost! Quote

fantom Posted October 1, 2009 Report Posted October 1, 2009 ....and you'll be able to keep them on all the time, without worry of melting through the plastic lens if not turned off on the ground. Think about pulsing them like this new LoPresti product: PowerPulse ConceptIt’s simple, lights in motion attract attention! Emergency vehicles, strobes and airport rotating beacons all use pulsing light systems. This system is a perfect complement to our already powerful BoomBeam HID lighting systems. Quote
Mooney_Allegro Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 I would be interested in the LED Recognition Lights. My avionics installer left the recog lights on too long on the ground and melted the lens on both sides. They also don't seem to put out a lot of light anyways and cost too much to replace. Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted October 31, 2009 Author Report Posted October 31, 2009 *update* A&P and I started looking at modifying the existing Whelen reflector assembly yesterday... Quote
j3gq Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Very interested too, please keep as posted. AJ Quote
carusoam Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 I was reviewing a friend's airframe logs for his M20R. I was surprised how many times the light lenses were replaced over the last 12 years. Is it just recog or is landing and taxi light lenses effected also? What happens? leave them on and they melt?, use them normally and they melt over a longer period of time? Best regards, - Anthony - Quote
MooneyMitch Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 Here is my experience with these lights melting the lense. If the unit is disassembled, putting it back together just exactly right is most important. In other words, if the actual lamp is removed from the assembly, you'd better make sure it is seated in the spring flange correctly when you put it all back together. Otherwise the lamp tilts up just enough, getting too close to the upper part of the clear lens and ..............viola.........the lens distorts from the heat of the lamp. Quote
Guilly Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 '92 MSE, i would be interested in the recog light. I've replace a lamp and both lens on both sides show minor distortion. Quote
