RoundTwo Posted March 12, 2023 Report Posted March 12, 2023 What is your favorite engine cleaner? Mineral Spirits, kerosene, Varsol, some other witch’s brew? Quote
Guest Posted March 12, 2023 Report Posted March 12, 2023 Varsol and a compressed air sprayer along with a bristle brush to loosen the dirt. Quote

Any will work -- they are all very similar chemically. My favorite is odorless mineral spirits because it doesn't stink. 2 Quote

I've always been curious why so many FAA documents say to use "Varsol", which is like specifying "Kleenex" for tissue. Kerosene was even a brand name long ago, so these things have just become generic. Mineral spirits or white spirits or even the "odorless" mineral spirits (I usually label my sprayer "mernal spertz" 'cuz I'm a hick), all work fine. People in highly ventilated areas who are bold sometimes get away with using 100LL in a pinch. 1 Quote
hubcap Posted March 12, 2023 Report Posted March 12, 2023 I still use mineral spirits. I keep a gallon in my hangar. Quote
Pinecone Posted March 13, 2023 Report Posted March 13, 2023 Hmm, another reason to go to 100 unleaded. Quote
