Hi all

Quick intro… my dad and I bought a very well equipped 1976 F model. He is a professional pilot ATP and CFII and has over 32k hours. He’s owned 3-4 planes (including an E model when I was a baby). This is my second plane. I had a pponked 182L that I sold in 2012 and have been flying various aircraft since then… mostly a TR182. With the 8.6 I put on the Mooney this week I have just over 730 hours. Planning on finishing my instrument by February.

Look forward to learning as much as possible from all of you.

What’s your favorite thing about the F model?

The balance; I find the F to be the sweet spot with range, speed, cabin size...close to a J, but with a more savory price.

With my limited hours… initial (non-scientific) observation it’s a little slower than expected and the cabin is tighter, but it’s sure fun to fly. This one has an excellent panel, so I have an F at J prices

Late model Fs have many of the ADs worked out and were the final refinement of a model that started in the 1960s. I’ve enjoyed the 31 years I’ve owned by 75.

Seems that mine likes between 6-8k best, agree?

Usually 8-10K but depends on wind.

Oh yah… we have a mystery switch with some funny looking lights (I think). Can anyone enlighten me? e7e805333ce848a9ae54d522aea56022.png

That look like someone added that. On some late model Fs, I have seen a switch that changes the glareshield lights from white to red. Maybe that is a fix for that switch having broke?

If the previous owner dropped $100k on the panel and left that switch there for light color, I’m going to be disappointed

What’s “a little slower” mean? Properly rigged it should be a reliable 150kt (+/- a few knots) airplane. I fly at whatever altitude provides most favorable winds. It has adequate climb performance to be very useable up into the teens.

what the useful load of your bird?

142TAS is what we mostly saw, I was expecting 148-152. Climbs great… 926 useful.

Headwinds from 4.5 to 12.5 ranged from 28-35kts. We stayed low for those few extra knots.

Normal cruise I see around 142 TAS, but LOP.  Probably close to 150 TAS ROP but not worth the increase in fuel flow to me; 8.5 vs. 10 gph.

Speed is pretty dependent on load too.  If you’re 1 person and 30 gal of fuel that’s 5kts or more difference than gross.

I only get 150ktas on my F ROP, ~6500’, cool temps, and light weight.
