for anyone who's brought their plane in to have an oil change done recently (obviously I haven't in a long time since I do my own, hence the question) what's the going rate these days?  a local shop quoted me $500 lol.  that's right, FIVE HUNDRED smackers.

Nope, local shop flat rate.

Wow. Details? I’m assuming $60-70 for 6-7 qts aeroshell 15/50 plus roughly $30 for champion filter, that leaves $20 for the shop with zero profit on the oil/filter.

They charged me $120 for an oil change on my Bravo. I’ll check with them tomorrow to see if that’s changed. I almost always change my own oil as well.

Depending on what model and what’s all being done with said oil change.  Time to cut open and examine the oil filter, time to inspect the exhaust system, lubricate the slip joints and waste gates, time to check the tire pressures, brakes and lights, time to update and fill out three log books, time to fill out the Blackstone forms box and mail it.  2-3 hours goes by in a hurry.

$120 here at GKT.

Your maintainer is definitely going to heaven!  A filter is $32.00 and oils $10.00 per quart, that’s $120.00 dollars without profit and labour.

I’ve already pointed that out, but thanks!

If you can even get the filter these days.

My wife does a great job of keeping the shelves stocked, we’ve never run out since the shortages started.

Perhaps their quote is for the full 50 hr inspection per the mx manual?

My MSC currently is charging (in round numbers) about $125 for oil and filter and about $250 for labor for most of what Clarence itemized above.

$363 at VUJ over a year ago included 8 quarts, filter and pulling the screen.  $125 labor at 28A with me providing the oil and filter.  $0 at VUJ with me providing labor, oil and filter.

That sounds like the “bring your own oil and filter“ price

Umm... yup, my mistake. The $120 was for oxygen servicing.

Currently $240 plus oil and filter, with Blackstone analysis thrown in. I use Philips X/C with Camguard and a Tempest filter so about $350 all in unless I do it myself.

Sorry for the mis-cue, a mind is a terrible thing.

To waste.

Cheers,
Rick

That is still a complete bargain on a Bravo. I used to think that was expensive until I started doing my own when I owned a Bravo so that I could put my eyes on things under the cowling every 25 hours. I still did it, but just getting that lower cowling back on with everything lined up just right is a total pain no matter how many times you've done it. It reminded me how underpaid most A & P's are.

No doubt! I take mine off, change the oil and do my inspections and mouse milking, and then invite some unsuspecting hangar neighbor over for a cold beverage.

”Hey, while you’re here would you mind…”

I’m running out of unsuspecting neighbors. At least I have them do the screwdriver part of the job.

Cheers,
Rick

I use a camping chair with the wide arms. They hold the lower cowl just right and i slide it up to the frame. Then with the chair holding the other side I latch one side then with the chair still supporting the cowl walk to the other side and secure it. I find it easier and less damaging than when you have another person trying to help and let the front of the cowling bang on the prop edge trying to pull it up.

The 231, 252 and Encore is a breeze compared to the Bravo. The actually bottom cowl itself  isn't the issue, it's getting the ducts which feed into the hoses to go in perfectly to make everything work.

If there were no other advancements between the Bravo and the Acclaim other than just the simplicity of putting the lower cowling on, Mooney hit a home run.
