Hogface Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 I need help....I am on my fourth M20 Turbo Bracket in 2 1/2 years. We have followed all directions and tried everything, from exhaust system rebuilds to relaxing and resetting all the inlets and turbo mounts. We started completely with the installation manual again from the ground up. My AP has contacted various other individuals, and spent a lot of time working the issue. Just wanting to know if anyone else out there is having or had the same problem. The brackets are getting pricing, and i just don't see them as a six month life item. The brackets have all cracked in different places, mostly around the two hold that hold the turbo, but as signficantly as the entire "fin" that holds the turbo. I love the performance it adds to the aircraft...but four? Additional information m20j 1990 Greg Quote
Piloto Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Greg, I would check the engine mounts. You may have a loose one that causes the engine to vibrate and thus put stress on the bracket. Also a prop balance may not be a bad idea. Most cracks on engines are due to excessive vibration. José Quote
KSMooniac Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 I don't have any specific knowledge of that system, but agree with Jose about the vibration concern. Do you have a 3-blade prop by chance, and have you done a dynamic balance? Are you getting any kind of warranty from the company? As an engineer, I'm interested from the technical perspective. If you could share some photos of the bracket installed and details of the cracks (off the plane if necessary). Quote
Skywarrior Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 A thought... you may be seeing the result of a harmonic that 'sits' on the bracket as a standing wave. That would cause stress cracks quickly, for sure. The lighter construction of the bracket - compared to the thickness of, say, the crankcase and heads, etc, - could contribute to its vulnerability. John Pleisse Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 This shouldn't be happening and for the $30k M20 Turbos demands for the system, you should have better resolution. What was their position? I would contact shops that have installed at least a couple to a few. I know Weber has done two or more over the years. Their main guy is Dorn Claire. He has some knowlege of the system. I am a big fan of their work and I am a big fan of the M20 Turbo system. Quote
KSMooniac Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Don Maxwell has installed a few of these as well, and might be able to offer some insight. Quote
