Slap Shade

I bought one of these at sun n fun last year and I absolutely love it. It’s completely opaque and when the sun is “right there” it fits the bill where we otherwise throw a jacket up in the window, et cetera. The only caveat is that it’s cold, it doesn’t stick well until I warm it up in front of the vent.

I just have some squares cut out of leftover pieces of static cling tint from tinting my back windows. They work great, will move them around depending on where the sun is.

Skates when you cut yours for the back windows, did you use any adhesive or are they doing just fine with only the “static”?

No adhesive is required.  Spraying a bit of water on helps remove any bubbles with a credit card or something similar.  Once stuck.. they're stuck unless you peel them off.  I copied Skates and absolutely love it.

I use the insta-cling window tint stuff which you can get at Wal-Mart or on Amazon or many auto parts places.   Use a scissors to cut pieces out of a roll, and a roll lasts a LONG time.   I leave a few pieces on the rear windows so passengers can move them around wherever they want them.

No scissors needed with this. One of the airplanes I fly us a DA40. Clear bubble canopy with very little sun blockage. Rub it on your pants leg to build up static and stick it on. Answer to a prayer.

That's not CB-compatible, though.   A roll of insta-cling costs less and has more than 17x area.   I already own scissors.

Super nice guy. I felt like he was almost surprised to make a sale to me at SnF. I bought the opaque square and a tint one, but the opaque one is the only one I find myself using.

I remember years ago AOPA was giving those away.  Maybe at their fly-ins.

If they stop sticking, just wash them with some soap and they'll be as good as new.

Now, if you grew up in the ‘50’s, you could dig out your old WinkyDink kit (kids tv show) and repurpose it. I won’t even try to explain.

That is exactly what the Sungard I bought on Amazon reminds me of. As I recall, about the same thickness too, so easy to remove/reuse. Just greener (color, not environmental - we didn't to environmental in the '50s).

Just like @skydvrboy said, also if you add a drop or two of dish soap to the water it will slide around easier when you position it. Stays in place, I have even put up cameras with the suction cup attached to the tint and nothing moves. When it gets old and you want to replace it just peel it off, clean the window, and do it again. I replace the stuff on my rear windows every couple years as it starts to get a little blurry over time.

And just because I’m paranoid about scratching the windows…you guys haven’t noticed it hurt them at all?

Nope, but I am very careful to clean them before putting the tint on. 2-3 passes with Plexus and a clean micro-fiber cloth for each time.

Edit: I think the tint has actually saved the back windows from scratches from the grandkids a time or two. I have found scratches in the tint but the window was fine.

I’ve bought some of the Smoke Gila film but am concerned about the amount of distortion I see looking through it just peeling the backing down. Does it clear up once installed, or remain that way? I’m thinking rear seat passengers might object to a less than clear view.

if it doesn’t clear up, I’ll swap out the smoke for Black and just use it as temporary sun shields.
