Jeev Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Just picked up my J from Artcraft yesterday and LOVE my new paint! They matched the picture I supplied perfectly and the quality is top notch. Everyone at Artcraft takes a HUGE amount of pride in their work and it shows. Time to FLY!!!! Quote
aerobat95 Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Very nice paint job. I wish you many happy years. I bet she flys faster and runs smoother...... :-) Quote
pjsny78 Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Jeev, This is really a beautiful plane. I am in the process of looking for a paint shop and was thinking about Artcraft. Did you get clear coat? Quote

orangemtl Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Very, very nice. Excellent paint scheme, and restrained but sophisticated colors. Enjoy! Quote
pjsny78 Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Jeev, Yes I have spoken to them and got a quote already. I was just very curious about the clear coat option. It’s a bit pricey and the opinions seem to differ on if you should get it or not. I was watching a video on avweb and their expert said it’s undesirable. Anyways. You have a fantastic looking bird and thank you. Quote
Ncbosshoss Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 I agree with all the above. Beautiful for sure! Quote

Jeev Posted December 5, 2011 Author Report Posted December 5, 2011 Thank you all for the comments... After spending a lot of money on the Mooney its nice to get some validation Quote
pjsny78 Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 thank you very much for your input. i am going with artcraft. the only thing i wasnt sure about was the clearcoat. thanks again and happy flying. Quote
Ron McBride Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 pjsny78 I am surprised about your interest in Artcraft. If you are concerned about the cost of Clear Coat. Do you realize that Artcraft is 3000 miles from New York. Or 500 gallons of fuel. Ron Quote
Ron McBride Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Jeev It looks great, when i get my F done, Artcraft is high on the list. Ron Quote
pjsny78 Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 N9154V, I Like your N#, My N# IS 9154K. To answer your question, I’m not concerned about distance. I travel all over in my Mooney. I am mostly concerned about which shop can do the best job at a fair price. I have gotten quotes from all the top paint shops in the U.S according to aviation consumer. artcraft seems to do more mooneys than most with the exception of maybe a shop or 2 in TX. artcrafts price seemed to be the best for the work quoted. all the rest use the same materials but charges allot more. so I am going with artcraft hopefully in January. they are all booked in December. jetdriven Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 I would look at the paint manufacturer's data and see if it is even possible. Just because you can mix up some clear coat and spray it over a LPU polyurethane doesnt mean it won't fail in 6 months. LPU paints are designed to dry very hard and glossy. Sanding it to dull all over is an impossible step, some places are going to remain shiny, such as around rivets and lap joints. Then clearcoating over that to get the shine back, you have areas where the bond is going to be poor, and the overall film thickness is going to be over the specified mils, so it is prone to chipping. Quote: Jeev I was going back and forth on the clear coat after getting feedback on the forums (search "clear coat" here and AOPA) I decided not to. I figured after 10 years of so I would rather have slightly faded paint (like I had) then faded paint AND peeling clear coat. I also fly about 200hrs a year in all kinds of weather and was advised against CC unless it was a show plane or hangar queen. What sealed the deal was a walk around my airport looking at all the aircraft with peeling CC, it looks terrible. Good luck and if you go wth a quality shop like Artcraft you will be happy either way. Quote
jetdriven Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Most M20J get somewhere in the range of 17 NMPG. KALB is 2200NM from KSMX. So, 4400 NM roundtrip, and 260~ gallons of gas. Still, a lot. Quote: N9154V pjsny78 I am surprised about your interest in Artcraft. If you are concerned about the cost of Clear Coat. Do you realize that Artcraft is 3000 miles from New York. scottfromiowa Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Jeev: Beautiful! The outside Pic is where the paint REALLY POPS. Enjoy her. Quote
pjsny78 Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 I don’t want to take away from Mr. Jeev's Post. this is really about him and his plane. but I fly an avg of 50hrs a month. if you look up my tail # on flightaware you can get an idea of just the IFR flying I do. it does not include VFR. doing a true cross country trip is long but I prefer long trips. I am looking for a quality shop and pretty much sold on artcraft. Quote
jetdriven Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 I didnnt account for any takeoffs and landings. Perhaps 300 gallons. Still, get what you want, not whats local. Quote
carusoam Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 http://www.kdaviation.com/main.htm PJ, On your way out to artcraft, consider a stop in robbinsville and visit Reese Brothers. They have painted a few Mooneys on the east coast. Mine is one of them, AOPA gave away a Mooney that got its paint there as well. Best regards, -a- Jeev, Must be hard to keep the the wings level, your new paint rocks! Quote
pjsny78 Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 carusoam, I called the folks at Robbinsville and got a quote from them. They are less than an hr away from me. they also have a shop in NY I think in Stewart or somewhere around there. I do not doubt they do good work but I can’t pass up Artcrafts price. The 2 shops from what I remember when I talked to them was that they use JETGLO and have almost the same process at artcraft. The only difference I could see was pricing $10k vs. $15,500. The advantage however is if there is a problem I don’t have to go out to California again to get it corrected. But you have a beautiful bird as well. I’d love to see it firsthand. I am based in FRG(Farmingdale Republic) not too far from you at all. Patrick Quote

Cris Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 Like Carusoam I had Reese paint my Eagle this past spring. It was a partial paint job of the fuselage and wing tips only & is pictured in another thread. It could not have turned out better. Nor is this my first experience with them as they willl handle followup issue with pleasure. They do use a clear coat process which is applied wet within two -three hours of the color coat. Ken Reece says this not only protects & enhances the undercoat but prevents the peeling issue of clear coats. If he did not do that clear coat which is standard on his paint work I am sure his price would be more competitive. He also will work with you if you have a competitive bid from another shop. More to the point however is the stunning design of Jeev's J. Congrats & enjoy. It is what you & everyone else see first when you arrive at the ramp. Nice job!! Quote
fantom Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 Just another "atta boy" for a very nice scheme! Still trying to think about a 4,500 NM trip for a paint job. Have you talked to Oxford in Maine? Probably the best shop in the country, but not cheap.http://www.oxfordaviation.com/ Quote
John Pleisse Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 Neisch.......... In the east, Dial Eastern and Hagerstown are also exceptional. Quote
