clipperskipper Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Hi I am looking at a 20J to use for business and am trying to figure my fixed costs. Any idea what I should pay for hull and liability? The aircraft will be hangered. Thanks! Quote
Rustler Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 1. How much time does the pilot have? In type? In retractable? 2. How much hull coverage do you want? How much liability? Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 I got a couple quotes back when I was looking. I got a quote for my 1990 Mooney M20J with a hull value of $84,000 for ~$1490 from the AOPA Insurance Agency. At the time I had about 2 hours in Mooneys and only about 34 hours of retract time. Total time was in the 420 hour region. On a 1985 Mooney 231 I got a quote for $1450 on a $90,000 airframe. I ended up with a $5100 commercial policy so I could teach in it/rent it. Edit: Does anyone have any experience with this group-buy at Falcon Insurance provided by MAPA? Quote
clipperskipper Posted July 19, 2009 Author Report Posted July 19, 2009 Adding up 20J and Ranger time I get over 100 hrs. ATP total time is 8450 with 8000 retract. I should think $70K hull and $300000 liability would cover it, plus I have an umbrella policy of $1m. AOPA can insure this? Thanks! Quote
Rustler Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 1980 J $85,000 hull $1,000,000/$100,000 liability Premium $1450 through AIG via Aircraft & Marine Assurance Quote
Cruiser Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 1984 J $114k hull $1,000,000/$100,000 liability > 100 hrs. in make/model. Premium $1418 Britt/Paulk Quote
Jeev Posted July 27, 2009 Report Posted July 27, 2009 1978 J VFR 200TT, 0 in type, 15 complex, 5 H/P 88k hull $2,000/ year through AOPA Quote
KSMooniac Posted July 27, 2009 Report Posted July 27, 2009 Not horrible, and it will be substantially less in Year Two after you add the IR. Quote

Parker_Woodruff Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 Sounds about right. Remember, high performance means nothing in this airplane. It's 200 hp, and not 201 unfortunately. Quote
The-sky-captain Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 Jeev- Have you tried Kel Petersen? I was with AOPA last year and KP beat them by $300 this go around. 800.777.5960. Congrats on the new plane. I too had 200TT and 0 retract when I bought my Mooney. The transition was very smooth and I am now pushing 200 hours in the Mooney this year alone. Quote
N207LS Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 I second the Kel Petersen comment... I saved about $250 my first year with them. I have had two different planes insured with them and have saved quite a bit of $$$ over the past few years. Also, their service is fantastic. I had to deal with a total loss due to a mechanical failure on a newly purchased airplane and Deanna (at Kel Petersen) was a huge help. Aaron Quote
Jeev Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 Thanks guys I will chek them out last year as I just bought the policy and don't want to change anything now so my loan will fund on time Quote

FlyDave Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 Quote: JimR Does anyone have a single limit policy? The quote that I recently got from AOPA was for $1 million in liability coverage, but with a $100,000 per passenger sub-limit. I'd feel better without the sub-limit. Just wondering if most of us are flying with or without sub-limits. Thanks, Jim Quote
skyking Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 Man, you guys get cheap insurance. I have over 6K hours and fly a A model (300 hrs on type) with only 70K hull, in motion, not in motion etc same liability etc and pay $2400 a year in Canada. Quote

Most of the posts below seem to also include sub-limits. Just wondering if "smooth" polices are being written on Mooneys these days, and if the concensus is that they are worth the presumably higher premiums. Quote

KLRDMD Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 Quote: JimR Ken, if I decide against the sub-limits, I'll give Laurie a call to see if she can provide me with the same coverage that you have at a price that I can afford. Quote
FlyDave Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 Quote: KLRDMD You generally have to ask for 1MM smooth and they'll often not write such a policy until you have a certain amount of total time as well as time in type. Quote

fantom Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 I've had a mill smooth on a '94 MSE for many years, and with 4,000+ hours, and $165K hull, pay just over $2K. Quote
Mooney65E Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 My wife was an aviation insurance broker and says not all companies are created equal. No point in spending money on insurance if the company won't come through at claim time. She recommends Airika Ackermann or Jon Doolittle at Sutton James Aviation Insurance (860) 249-8066. They shop all the companies, except Avemco, for you every year. They are both pilots and know Mooneys well...the company has had a 201 J model and a 252 K model. Sutton James has been our broker on our '65E for the past 10 years and they never disappoint. Even with my wife on the policy, who hasn't flown in six years, we still get a great rate and the option for her to go back to it at any time with 6 hrs. dual, BFR and med. Quote
