RobertGary1
If you’re bored and have about 20 minutes you can get your FAA remote pilot certificate. Got mine in the mail today and was surprised it has a different number than my pilot, agi, and cfi certificates. -Robert
N201MKTurbo
I got one when they first came out. The studying and the test took almost 4 hours.
skydvrboy
I got mine about a year and a half ago. I remember it being closer to 20-30 minutes to skip through the free online quiz to get my license. My son is working on getting his right now (no pilots license), so he spent a around 4 hours studying and will have to pay the $150 testing fee. takair
If I read it correctly, a CFI needs to process the paper work, is that correct? Also, looks like it needs to be renewed every two years, is that right too.
N201MKTurbo
I had to fill out an application in IACRA, then had my CFI friend sign on and give it an electronic signature (I don’t understand the necessity of this part), then take the online test.
RLCarter
I did mine online with the FAA (had to be a private pilot or higher), took 30 minutes or so. After completion to get the actual license said to contact the FSDO, never bothered

No but it requires currency just like part 61 required a bfr. You only need to go to the wings website and take the short exam again. You keep the results just like you keep bfr endorsements If asked. -Robert

You would think it would require that I’ve actually flown a remote aircraft, which I haven’t. I have a friend with a nice one. I watched him fly it a few times. No, was just wondering if it was listed on the certificate. Between my IA and CFI, I’m already doing 2 renewals every two years which sucks up a bunch of hours. Based on what I read, this would be another two year renewal...which seems like overkill for this. Will dig deeper. edit....I see Roberts response. Seems easy enough... I don’t have a need for it either, but may be easier to do it now and get grandfathered than later.
thinwing
Took the online course exam...about 30 min...than called local fsdo with my log book showing latest BFR...it was casual Friday for the feds, and after buzzing in and getting my visitors pass, met the local fed inspector who badly needed a shave! So we st down at a table ,he looks at my last bFR..and proceeds to nitpick the write up from the CFI.The fed wanted ,besides the boiler plate CFI sing-off ,the actual time flown etc.Fortunately I could show the guy the auto track and log from Garmin pilot for the flight. That placated the guy enough to issue the temp certification, but the whole thing left a bad taste
LANCECASPER
All in all I think it's best to have a separate number. If you wanted it allows you to get paid to do aerial drone photography without a commercial pilots license. Also if for some reason you bust a regulation with the unmanned license it shouldn't affect your fixed wing license.
