Picking up my new plane tomorrow from Don Maxwell.

Thanks to Ken Reed for giving it a good shakedown out in AZ for me.  I still haven't seen the plane in person and won't until tomorrow!

Extremely sweet, Parker. Don't you need to fly it down to Ft. Lauderdale this weekend? If not, I have to find an excuse to fly up to Tampa. I hope you have a hanger for that beauty.


You now own one of the lowest hour 252's in existence, and thanks to Don Maxwell, a good PPI, all squawks being fixed, and a reasonable seller, you got a killer deal.

Nice! Looks like a really clean plane. Having said that. I'm sure the avionics shop and Aero Comfort will be getting a call... Wink

@ Fantom - Gary, I'll be flying back to FL Monday.  I'm sure I'll be down to Ft. Lauderdale within a week.  It's going back to TX within 3 weeks to sit so I don't get nailed by the FL use tax (still a TX resident)


@JimR - Useful is less than 850lbs.  There is room for improvement as-is.  But I would like to do the Encore conversion at some point which would put it over 1000 lbs useful


@Dav8or - In time.  Waiting till Oshkosh is over before I make any decisions...might even wait till AOPA expo is over.

Consider the MT prop... it would do *very* nicely on a K, especially one with a metal 3-blade prop.  Mine was 11 lbs lighter than my original 2-blade McCauley, and I think they're ~25 lbs lighter than a metal 3-blade...maybe more.  My only complaint is that they seem to be optimized for lower RPMs whereas I'd rather run higher RPMs while LOP at cruise altitude.  With a K that concern is moot since you can just run more MP at lower RPM and keep the power up.

you will really like the large JPI display but it needs to be moved to the left of the stormscope and the #2Nav CDI moved to the blank spot above, that's what I did and it greatly improves the scan. I watch the engine monitor alot...... i.e. CHT

My panel is all-white (well, UV-faded to a light beige). I really love that color in the cockpit.

Parker, I have the lighter panel and really prefer it.  It makes the entire cockpit lighter and feel more open.  Try it awhile before you change it.

IMHO it is easier for the eyes to focus on the instruments with the lighter panel.

I have a black panel in my '77, and if/when I re-do everything for a PFD and modern engine monitor I plan to start from scratch and go with a light tan panel to match my interior.

Best of luck with your new aircraft. Very nice clean Mooney.  Opinion: I've had light colored, and black panels in various aircraft, and while black is easy to touch up, light colors open up the feel of the airplane, and make the instruments just a tad more distinctive in the scan. I have arranged for the fabrication of all new panels for my current avionics project, and they will be sandstone - a light tan color.
