N9937c Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 I have just procured a set of mooney landing gear tools. If you need to change rubber donuts these are the way to go. Also have the fixtures for the overcenter torque. Any body need to use these tools for annual or maint.? Larry Quote

klbcfi Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 They tell me the gear donuts are about $90~$100 each. Is there a source for something more reasonably priced? Quote
231Pilot Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 That is the price range, you might find them for a lttle less....I found them for $87 apiece, but they had just sold the last ones they had. Seems like they could have priced them even lower if they didn't have any . I ended up paying $90 apiece plus tax and shipping. The real expense is the labor in changing all of them. More than the cost of the donuts. Quote

Changing the shock discs on Jolie's E is now complete and these tools made it a snap. The tools are now in a nice wooden box so Larry can ship them easily if someone else needs them. 1970m20e Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Interested in the main gear donut changers. I have the "overcenter" torque tool that I purchased. I'd like to rent these changers as well. Great!!! I have donuts that I bought for $87 last year. Changed the nose ones on a hydralic press when we were doing the nose gear rebuild in March. Quote

flyboy0681 Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 Question regarding replacement of the biscuits themselves. The annual on my '83 J will take place this month and all of the biscuits are being replaced, having been installed in 2000. After they are replaced can I expect anything different in ground handling? 1 Quote

Bill_Pyles Posted April 23, 2012 Report Posted April 23, 2012 What is the deal with replacing the landing gear donuts? Mine say 1998 and they look great, as in no cracks and they are smooth and black. I have read that they need to be replaced every 5 years and up to every 15 years. Has anyone tested the resilience of the old disks versus new disks? Has anyone checked them with adurometer? Are old discks harder or softer than new disks and what is the effect of the difference in terms of ride and handling characteristics? Does anyone know the science on these Lord disks, or is the replacement of them based partly on tribal tradition? I would really like to know. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted April 23, 2012 Report Posted April 23, 2012 Hi Bill. In my experience, this is what I have found. Hoist your aircraft. Let it sit for a few minutes. For the mains, if you can spin the shock discs by hand, it is time for replacement. Another way to test, is again with the aircraft hoisted, push and pull in a front to rear motion on the wheel. If you feel excessive play, that's a good sign to replace. Seems the talk is that the long body discs do not last as long as those on the shorter body airplanes due to weight differences. I have realized a "ride" difference with the new shocks........smoother. You can actually change the mains with out the gear tools. The nose, you do need to have the specified tool. Hope that helps. KSMooniac Posted April 23, 2012 Report Posted April 23, 2012 I believe there is some guidance in the service manual about checking the condition. Life span is variable based on climate, use, storage, and weight (ie heavier long body Mooneys stored outside in the desert won't last as long). I believe the check is when the plane is jacked and the weight removed from the wheels... the donuts should rebound from their compressed state such that they fill the space between the retainers and they should not be able to be turned by hand, or especially see daylight between the retainers and the donuts.
