I have one of these installed in my plane. I was playing with it today.  It's supposed to have DME, display GS, etc.  I tuned in the Phoenix VOR, verified it with the morse, but the unit is not displaying any of the info it should  Things to check?  Would you even bother fixing it if it's broken?  I have a 430W, so I'm not lacking there, but I just wonder what it could be?

These are just guesses...

Pull the knobs out or push them in to activate the added skills...?

No, I wouldn't pay extra, but I would get the manual...

Does that help any?

The thing that ended the lives of my Narco radios was the plastic gears related to tuning the radio frequencies.  The teeth would break and the repair cost was so high...

My BK KX165 gives what radial you are actually on by pulling out the tuning knob.  Great if the VOR display takes a vacation...

Knowing DME distance can be incredibly helpful if you don't have a GPS...

To receive DME data, you have to be receiving the DME information.  At altitude with station ID...

Are you familiar with the VOR dots and dashes to ID the station?  There are few of them, the last one indicates the DME being available(?)

If you don't hear the complete station ID sequence, you are not getting the DME data.  DME data is speed and straight line distance to the station...

If that doesn't work, look for you DME antenna.  Clean and reconnect...

This is a stretch of my memory...

I've been doing some googling and it actually may be the CDI.  It seems you might have to have a specific CDI for the DME to work.  I don't think I have the 'upgraded' CDI.  I'll have to pull out my logs and see what's in there.

So just a long overdue update to this post.

I HAVE DME!!!

When we were replacing the throttle cable, I noticed that the CDI was in fact the IDME-895.  So, it should have been working.  @N201MKTurbo climbed up under the panel and started poking around. He discovered that the BNC cable to the CDI was simply not plugged in.  Oops.

Tested it today and it works great, with one caveat.  There is supposed to be a DME displayed on the CDI, but it’s not working.  Not sure if it’s the LED that’s burnt out or what.  The info displays properly on the radio, so that’s cool.

I think you have an IDME 895 indicator. The IDME 891 indicator has a dimmer knob for the LED display where your top right mounting screw is. I suspect yours uses some kind of external dimmer control. I can't find a PDF of the install manual but essco has a paper manual for $20

It would be a good investment to figure out why the LEDs are out.

I found one online.  I think this page is the first place to look.  I don’t recall that it illuminates at night and I wonder if the LED display is powered by the same connection.

Well it’s a negative on that.  That wiring seems to be connected properly.  Now I gotta trace the rest and see if everything else is hooked up right

But are you seeing lighting voltage on those pins? Is the instrument lighting reostat turned all the way down?

The instrument lights up bright, and yes there is voltage.  It's not controlled by a rheostat, it just has on or off with the cabin lights.

I dug through the whole harness today.  Near as I can tell, every connection is properly made.  The only thing not connected is the marker beacon wiring.  That should have no bearing on the DME display in the CDI.

It looks like you have the install manual.  I have an operation manual for IDME-891 and it does refer to the upper right On/Off switch and "DME L.E.D. Display Dimmer Control".

I have a IDME-895 connected to an NCS-812.  I dropped out of flying for while after buying my M20F so I never got to try out all the features of this instrument, so I was shocked to learn about having MB and DME in the indicator.

Looking for an Operation manual for it as well as the Install manual.

@DJ67

Send me a PM to remind me I think I might have most of what you are looing for.

The displays are still available if you have any digits that are not lighting up.  Digi key ahs 25 available.  They are not that expensive and easy to change.

For the NCS 812

The Vishay-Dale number is PD-020D025-7

It also know as 50775-1

For the MK-12D

The Vishay-Dale number is PD-020D025-5

It also know as 50401-1

Double check the part number but I believe these to be correct.
