skyking Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Is anybody here using the new Garmin Aera 510? I just bought one last week and love it so far. I wanted the GPS496 but they are no longer available ( discontinued) so Garmin offered me this as an alternative. If anybody has WX weather etc hooked up to your GPS i would like to hear your comments on how well it works or does not work. Quote
rob Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I'm using the Aera 560 and XMWX and it works flawlessly. Quote
Gilt Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I have the 396 with the XMWX...AWESOME. Had the pilot-lite its good however the full pilot WX is great... Quote
fantom Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I traded a 396 in on a 510, and love it. WX is great, and actually clearer than my buddies GDL 69 on his 430. 510 touch screen is very intutive, easier to use than those tiny buttons, and the unit has never gone off line or needed re-booting to figure out where it is. skyking Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 Thanks for the input. It is a very cool unit but it scared the hell out of me on friday. As i was about to touch down it started screaming terrain..pull up....terraine..pull up! cant wait to get all the other features set up. i like the satellite view and the topography overlays. i think i will be quite happy with this choice. mooney27239 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I have a 396 with weather. It is pretty accurate. Most of the times I see the weather before the controllers see it. It does take a little getting use to because it shows radar returns so it might show rain but in actuality the rain isn't reaching the lower altitudes that you are flying at. I still like it and wouldn't want to do without. Thinking about upgrading to the 696 so I can have enroute charts and approach plates. Quote
eldeano Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I have the Aera 510 with wx and it works great. I also have an ipad with a skyradar box. Still using the aera for wx and moving map. I use the ipad more for SIDs and aproach plates as well as airport diagrams, and seamless charts. I find the seamless enroute low charts in both skycharts and flight publications overlap at a bad place in the Seattle area and some info is omitted around the area I fly. The aera is smaller and easier to refer to on the yoke during a scan. Also it is good for figuring the winds. I am not however looking forward to paying for the updates. I already have to pay enough to Jeppesen to update my panel GPS. Quote
fantom Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Note that on the Aera you can set one of the four corner fields, on the main map page, to show the nearest reported ground wind direction and speed. I find it's a very nice feature. Quote

eldeano Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I like the fact that I can fit the Aera on the yoke and refer to it more easily. It also is much brighter and has more features then the Skyradar app. I lose reception of the ADS-B for some reason sometimes over the Cascade Mountains which is when I need it the most. Also the sensitivity of the ipad gets me sometimes, with the Aera you have to touch and push in a little, this is helpful in the chop. I love my Ipad, don't get me wrong. But for my situation the Aera-ipad combo works best right now. I usually have Charts up on the ipad and the Aera is my moving map weather reference. Skyradar GPS has been flawless and I hope to soon have geo-referenced Approach Plates on the ipad. Hope this helps Quote
