I guess I don't know much about what's checked in a major overhaul.  I'd need to look up the procedures on that.  One concern would be checking the crankshaft.  Maybe it hasn't been examined since the last (pre-2000) overhaul, which I don't know the date of yet.  I was actually looking at the engine time differently than you guys.  They did the "overhaul" in 2000, and then on the later undated entry it says the cylinders were replaced at 272 SMOH, so in a sense at 1325SMOH that would make it ~1100 hours.

Another thing, what do you guys think the issues are with what looks like a rusted starter flywheel in the photograph?

Good investigative work. I actually purchased my M20G from Airmods a few months ago, I also have a rusty flywheel, thats not a big deal, right?

I flew it to Weber for a PPI, let me know if I can help or share info!

Check to see if your fly-wheel has all the teeth.  That is what counts.  If it is missing a tooth the starter bendix (drive) has difficulty staying engaged while starting. There are cleaners that can remove the rust.  The rust is probably from the steal being worn and deposited on the flywheel gear teeth.

While you are looking this stuff over.  Lubricate the bendix device.  It has a method of disconnecting from the fly wheel based on momentum.  Keeping it clean and lubricated works really well.

finer details from a plane I don't own any longer.  Wish I could hand over some of that knowledge to you guys...

Any new info on 84V? It looks good on paper.

Matt

Hi Matt:

I haven't followed up on this plane since the time I started this thread.  I was waiting for the logs to be posted out of curiosity about the previous engine overhaul, but I decided I didn't want to deal with the unorthodox overhaul this one had.  Also, I originally thought it had a 430W, but it's just a normal 430.  If you're interested, you should reach out to Dave at Airmods.
