N3830H Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 We are planning a flight with two Mooneys this fall from the east coast to Glacier NP and then on to Calgary/Banff area. The prices we're getting for parking near Calgary are incredibly high....$55 per night for each Mooney is about the best we've seen. Does anyone know of a good option? We'll have to have access to a rental car somehow...which may complicate things. Thanks, Karen Quote

Thanks, Karen Just as with the USA, bigger airports have fees, smaller ones don't, I've paid more in the USA for parking than at home. Self serve fuel is rare. If you stop at CYKF Kitchener Ontario the local MSC will give you free parking and maybe a car. Clarence Quote

FBCK Posted April 24, 2016 Report Posted April 24, 2016 Yes CYBW is the airport you want but there is not alot of parking there, Springbank Aero might but your only choice, but sometimes you can get parking at The Calgary flying club, its worth the call. The gas will also be a little cheaper there. The alternative airport is HighRiver but its 50km or so south of Calgary, not really worth the trouble. Your obervation is accurate though, Im based out of spring bank and went to the east costlast summer, its much cheaper to fly in the USA. Ottawa international was $105 a night, with no tiedowns and poor service and gas was 2.72 per litre. GA is much smaller in Canada and you pay for it. Quote

Yes, I have contacted Springbank directly and verified that the tiedown per night is $55 for our Mooney.....$160 per night for a hangar (which we wouldn't use...) Those are Canadian $$, so not quite so painful.... I understand that tiedown is probably extremely limited at Springbank Aero...so the $15 tiedown is probably not going to be available. Late August is the timeframe. Just thought there might be an alternative...but guess it's not quite what we're used to in US.... Quote

I use Executive Flight Centre (http://www.executiveflightcentre.com/Springbank#ad-image-0). Last time I was there (January), it was $35/night CAD, with the first night waived with fuel. Fuel price was $1.92/L CAD (GST included). I'd suggest you give them a call. If you haven't flown to Canada before, ensure you have the CBP Decal, comply with eAPIS and have both the FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit and FCC Aircraft Radio Station License. Springbank is a CANPASS only airport (so you need to be a CANPASS member to clear customs there); if you decide not to join, you'd likely want to clear customs at Lethbridge. I'd avoid Calgary International at all costs. With landing fees and ramp fees, a single landing would be around $300 CAD. Let me know if you have more questions. rdav Posted April 25, 2016 Report Posted April 25, 2016 I would also chose CYBW, but if you're lucky enough to have clear weather and light winds why not consider a trip to Golden, BC (CYGE)? One hour from Springbank along the Transcanada highway. The view of the Rockies through that pass is amazing. Much better at 10,000 ft than at 30,000 ft! Just watch that mountain wave! The winds channel through that pass from the west. Quote

Last time I cleared at Regina and avoided hefty fees, then went west to Medicine Hat and then to Springbank. I did have the experience of clearing at Calgary International before. Very friendly controllers and FBO staff, but the NAV Canada landing fee left me hurting. Quote

thinwing Posted April 28, 2016 Report Posted April 28, 2016 We used golden as our gateway...after glacier you continue up Columbia river valley..clear customs at Cranbrook than another 80 or so to Golden.Rental car available close into town and will pickup.Nice drive to Banff / lake Louise...Calgary route to Banff not nearly as scenic...watch out for skydivers at golden ,fuel prices not bad for BC Quote
