Just purchased a 1964 M20E and it has a cracked lens cover. I'm having a difficult time locating a new one.  It is a cowl mounted landing light.  The oval shaped lens cover has a silver grey border ring on it.  Any ideas on who makes a part like this as I keep coming up empty?  Thanks!

If this is the lens that is less than 6 inches in diameter and slightly convex? If so, any reasonably competent hangar elf can make a replacement. I can get my elf to give you a detailed run-down on how to do it. It does require an old one to work from however. Or if you send me the old one, I could probably get him to turn one out for little more than the cost of materials. Certainly under $20.

I completely missed the obvious fix.  Nothing like a good hangar elf! :D  I might have one myself but if he doesn't work out or pulls the union card I might just take you up on your offer.  Thanks for the recommendation!

You might want to tell your elf that Plexiglas is better used for that application than is Lexan.  It is less likely to yellow over time or with the presence of heat.

Heat??  LED lights don't generate heat towards the lens....... :)

After designing and building a number of custom LED lighting assemblies, I can assure you that LEDs generate heat!

Now they don't radiate any IR, so all the heat comes out the back not the front.

Ok.....but my response was meant to be joke as a play off hanger elves building a lens cover. I'm sure there's more than a Mooney owner or two using LED lighting installed by hanger elves that's not PMA/FAA approved. :) As someone who's stood in close proximity to halogen lighting on construction sights I can assure you the opinion that LED lights don't generate heat is valid.......relatively speaking of course.

Well, sure, that's what I said, they don't radiate any Infrared. All the heat in LEDs is conducted away by the heat sinks on the back of the lighting assemblies. Halogen lights, and any incandescent lights radiate massive amounts of infrared energy. That is what you feel standing in front of them and that is mostly what will heat up the lens.

Fixed it.....I'll try my best to be technically accurate with my feeble attempts at humor in the future. :)

So if you are reproducing an STC part is it not still owner produced?  Having the mounting ring would say that at one time the STC was obtained.

Now to the other person asking about the new install, the mounting ring that the polycarbonate mounts too would be a little tricky to produce.   Not impossible, but tricky.  Probably take several tries

Could I see a picture of your light cover.

I was talking with a buddy that has a J that needs a new cover and I was noticing his E does not have a cover.
