I just had my E model annualed at LUK in the Cincinnati area. I was just told the basic annual cost from last year has gone up from $1000 to $2000. This is the basic plus anything else that was out of the basic annual such as tires or brakes etc. Oil change was included. This probably isn't totally unrealistic except that it doubled in a year. So, I'm looking for someone in the area that will do my next annuals and might allow me to assist wth inspection cover removal, re install and other items that would help with the cost. I'd like to be able to continue flying.

next question: what percentage increase might I expect going from a manual gear E model to a J?

I personally would be on the lookout for a new shop.  I'm sadly not nearby where I could give you a pointer on a shop, but that level of increase seems nuts.

Best of luck!

For reference: Our local shop puts his flat rate schedule on his web site. Manual gear Mooneys are $1430 (22 man hours), Electric gear models, B thru Js are $1560 (24 man hours). He permits owner assist, at least for owners who have a hanger on the field to do the work in.

Don't like the 100% increase, though I have to admit, with everything that has to be done $2000 doesn't sound outrageous.  My owner assist annual on a Cherokee ran $800.  I do plan on assisting with the Mooney, seems like a lot of time gets spent taking out screws, which I can do just fine.

What shop did your annual?  I had my mooney at LUK for three or four months to get my instrument ticket.

And to think I complained this year when my shop went from $1800 to the new rate of $2000.

Going up a grand is a pretty big increase.

Did you ask why the huge increase?

Owner assisted annuals for me run in the $800 range if no squawks are found....but there's always a little something. If you can spare the time, it's always to our benefit to help with the annual. I trust my AP/IA but I feel better when I'm involved in the process. My concern when shopping for someone to work on the plane is experience. I was having issues with my HSI. I thought the head unit needed to be overhauled but wanted to have an avionics shop to double check so I flew to a shop just West of where I'm based. The owner wasn't in that day and the avionics tech working on my plane, although very nice, was inexperienced. It was obvious, because I had to help him with troubleshooting and I know diddly squat about avionics other than the information I'm supposed to get from the instrument while flying. Although we were able to find the problem (gyro), I decided I'd better find another shop. Worked out great as I was able to get the gyro overhauled cheaper and saved a couple hundred dollars on the IFR certification.

Finding a new shop is exactly what I'm trying to do. This is my second bad experience this year at this place. I get the distinct feeling they do not want me back. I have it tied down there and I know they are upset that I changed my front tire myself instead of having them do it so that is probably part of the reason for doubling the annual rate.

Mine in Huntington, WV was significantly less than that. It's ~40 Mooney minutes east, in my    C.

Hank, could you give me the info on the shop you used. I was hoping to find a mechanic that does it as a sideline or a shop that I could help with the job somewhat but so far not much luck. It is a year down the road so I have time to do a little investigating.

nels--

I used Attitude Aviation, they have shops at both KHTS (Class D) and KHTW (uncontrolled, 4nm away, where I was based). Their phone is either 740-894-4144 or 740-894-4414. I think the first is the A&P, and the second is the FBO, but I never could keep them straight even when I was based there.

Hope everything works out for you.
