joepilot Posted August 24, 2015 Report Posted August 24, 2015 In the plane at work, these "stick on" shades work great. But anybody know if they can be used on the plastic Mooney windows? Can't get in touch with anyone there to ask. I know the Kraco type window tint says not to use on acrylic. Thanks, Joe Quote
carusoam Posted August 24, 2015 Report Posted August 24, 2015 What sliding window are they referring to? The challenge with the soft PVC plastic is it uses a solvent based plasticizer to make it soft. Acrylic, like mooney windows, can be susceptible to some solvents. If your windows are susceptible to the solvent in the film, it will also pick up some color from it. I think I would avoid trying it without a confirmation from the manufacturer. joepilot Posted August 25, 2015 Author Report Posted August 25, 2015 Thanks! I'm leaning towards the side of caution, too. Don't want the things heating up & wrecking my windows. These are made for airliners & they're referring to the #2 sliding side window of the Boeings, etc. 1 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 Does anyone know a source for the original (60s era) curtain hardware? My window frames have the mounting holes for the door and the rear seat windows. A friend could easily make curtains. Quote
M20F Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 I find one or two of these to be very useful. http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/cockpit-tools/other/suction-cup-collapsible-sun-shade.html Moveable and doesn't fully block vision like a curtain would. Quote
PaulB Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 Take a look at this: http://csobeech.com/windowtint.html They seem to have good results with the vinyl tint. I bet this product is very similar and probably just as safe. Quote

joepilot Posted August 25, 2015 Author Report Posted August 25, 2015 Cool thanks! Those suction cup ones from Sportys look good. But the slap on shades from Spruce probably take a little less room to store. Quote

To the OP both fold up/roll up to where you can fit about 36362647473 of them in your side pockets. Given the price just order a couple and play around with what works. Quote
Spenscot Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 any Mooney guys try the CSOBeech "Wal-Mart" tint job? 1 Quote
TWinter Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 Here is the static cling. Took some time and careful trim, but three years and still looks good. A HUGE difference in the cabin with TN heat. Obviously I don't remove it, but from a legal standpoint it is 100% legal within FAA standards since it is a "cling tint" and removable. This is 35%, it looks darker in the picture because it's in the hanger and the canopy cover is still draped over the other windows. Works fine during night flight and has no distortions. -Tom 1 Quote
PaulB Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 any Mooney guys try the CSOBeech "Wal-Mart" tint job? I've put it on my windows. Looks pretty good and was easy to install. Cheap too. $11 a roll and 2 rolls is all it takes. Quote
Piloto Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 I tried the film shade and the suction cup and found they fall out the window. Also there is the storage issue with them. I end up using the roll over shades from Walmart ($4.95) that works pretty well. Just pull down on the shade tab for the desired amount of shade. To retract just push on the little button. My wife love them. José 1 Quote
Ned Gravel Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 I got new suction cups from the manufacturer this year at Oshkosh. Ned Gravel Lucky steward of C-FSWR, a '65 E model at Rockcliffe, Ontario, (CYRO) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Piloto Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 That's a good idea too. Are they suction mounted as well? I have to agree - the suction cups that come with the shades are not strong at all, and they refuse to work for me anymore. Maybe they work better at work since both the windshield and side windows are glass... But since I don't carry a 50 pound flight bag any more (we use EFB's), I don't have much room for storage. In the Mooney, I store them in the seat back pockets once they fold up, along with the O2 cannulas. They come with suction cups but I attached them using the existing window panel screws for a permanent installation. Suction cups loose their holding force with altitude. I have them in all four windows. Works great to keep the sun glare out of tablets. http://www.target.com/p/eddie-bauer-2-pk-roller-shades/-/A-15346391#prodSlot=_1_3 José Quote
