The installation of the ADS-B is now complete in my plane, but haven't yet had a chance to take it up and play with it.

Anyone with this set-up able to tell me the basics of use. Does the weather and traffic automatically pop up when on the map page, or must I do any set up to see them.

Thanks

Don

Don, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on that setup. I've got the 430W/330ES combo and am seriously considering adding the GDL 88 for ADS-B In. One concern is the screen size for weather. I already get TIS-A traffic so I'm assuming that would be the same. Please keep us posted.

As can be seen, I haven't seen any responses yet. I'm really surprised no one else has this set up, or maybe they just haven't had time to report on it.

I mainly got the GDL 88 to get me compliant, so having the weather and traffic visible on the 430 is not too important. I have my Ipad Mini and foreflight with Stratus, so I will have weather and traffic available anyway.

I was just wondering if I may have to switch to a different screen on the 430 to look at weather and/or traffic on that unit. Also, if they come up automatically, can you disable them if they get in the way.

I will try to remember to post what I learn when I get a chance to play with it.

Most 88 users have probably upgraded to GTNs, personally if I had a 430,530 with a 88, I would run to have the flightstream 210 install, which fixes the weaknesses of the 430; like limited traffic targets, no airway support, and allows you to display traffic, wx on your iPad instead of the tiny 430 screen

Don, I just added GDL88 to my GNS530. I haven't played with it enough to answer all of your questions. Here is what I know about my installation,

1. The weather shows on the map page. I believe it can be enabled and disabled in the map page setup.

2. Traffic does not show on my map page because I don't have heading synchronization. An alert pops up with nearby traffic and I flip over to the traffic page. I'm finding that I tend to just leave it on the traffic page in busy airspace.

3. The unit shows plenty of traffic targets.

4. The weather has to be set for either regional weather or CONUS weather which is really stupid. Foreflight is smart enough to integrate both on the same display.

5. The METARs (and TAFs) are on separate pages and don't display on the map (I believe they do display on the GTNs though.

Share what you learn with us. Lee

Thanks Lee, you are ahead of me. I didn't know there was a traffic page. Just the kind of information I was looking for.

Lee, I have TIS-A and it show all traffic I the main navigation screen. It automatically changes to the traffic screen it traffic is too close. Is that not how it works with your setup? I have a GNS430W/GTX330ES ADS-B in setup.

Don,

I have this exact set up along with Flight Stream 210 for blue tooth to my iPad.  To answer your questions, to get weather on the moving map all you have to do is select it in map set up.  Or you can go to the weather page and it always displays there.  Traffic is much the same.  Traffic should appear all the time on your moving map and give you oral warnings if the target gets close.  You can also twist the knob one click to access the dedicated traffic page.

Only issues I've seen are a known bug that when stationary the GDL88 shows a fault because it's not sure what the heading is.  also a couple of times the GDL88 has given me "ownship" traffic warnings where the TIS-B see's my aircraft as a different target.

Good luck with your set up as you get familiar with the 88 and 430 combo.  Overall they seem to play together pretty well although not without faults.

I went to the avionics shop today because the FAA was not seeing my ADS B out. Just a programming issue, but now the traffic does display on my map page. So, Gary and George, mine is working like you said. Lee
